Hi
I am trying to put together the ideas for sfg at my place.
I think I need to have something under my boxes. I have a place in the garden for them, but there are a lot of trees about which tend to grow their roots into the garden, and I think it is necessary to have something under the box. Don't think wood is feasible (partly because of termites). Any ideas?

Hello, Malcolm, and welcome to the forum and SFG! glad you\'re here

A box bottom isn't necessary, but if your trees are especially invasive, you might try something like weed-block fabric and/or hardware cloth. I have also heard of people using multiple layers of cardboard, though I don't know if that will aggravate your termite problem. How about scrap pieces of vinyl flooring? Maybe you could experiment with several solutions to see what works best for you.

Best wishes, and happy gardening! flower

How about a Table Top SFG? Put your SFG on legs and you won't have to worry about the tree roots. Very Happy

Pour a slab of concrete...lol. But, actually, if you could find a way to make it drain well, that would be a great solution albeit a tad expensive.

Couple layers of weed cloth would work for awhile, but really anything will break down to tree roots over the course of years. Your best bet is to get away from the trees.....I realize that may not be possible.

Table top boxes or carpet are the two things that come to mind

Personally I use roofing shingles under my boxes. Keeps any weeds from growing up through as well and will last for decades. You can usually get them free from construction sites that have leftovers or maybe you know someone putting on a new roof in your neighborhood. They will be happy to give you all you want to take. Hope this helps.
