Hello from England, UK

Hi all, just wanted to pop in to say hello after joining the Forum today. My name is Mick, 52, from England in the UK. I have not done any gardening believe it or not for about 30 years. This was only because my garden is coverered in sheds where I kept racing pigeons and now they are gone my son has filled them with Royal Python snakes. I was given another piece of land attatched to mine by my wife's mother because it was a local tip. To give you an idea I cleared 13 bikes, 8 beds, 1000 ish glass bottles. 2 - 8 yard skips of DIY rubble and seived manualy about 60 ton of mixed rubble and soil. This has now left me at the moment with a 20 feet x 70 feet piece of land with about 40 ton of excess top soil on it. Phew!! This month I will be altering the fencing and moving the excess topsoil and then I will be ready to start SFGing.

I have ordered the book for Christmas and I am looking forward to chatting with you all.

Sorry I'm a bit late to the chorus -- you posted after I'd fallen asleep on the sofa last night , so I didn't see you here until this morning.

I'm LaFee, regional host for the Europe forum, and an American transplant to France (nearly Paris).

You'll find lots of great advice and nice people here -- the kettle's always on, and we're glad to have you with us.

I am a little worn out myself But it will all be worth it in the end.

I have put a few photos of my work so far for you to see what I mean.


This is an aerial picture from google maps and the green you can see on my new plot are about 25 years growth of blackberry bushes on top of all the rubbish that has been dumped on the plot. Ouch, they didn't half hurt.



As you can see I have plenty of topsoil. I am hoping to lose quite a lot when I put the new fence up with gravel boards at the bottom. I will be able to raise the plot by about 6 inches all over and then put the rest on the yard over the road that we own.

I don't fly, but have always wanted to come to England to visit the famous gardens. When my sister passed away, my niece gave me her approximately 2 thousand English Home and Garden magazines. I was reading one yesterday and dreaming.

You have such wonderful weather for growing.

Very exciting. thanks for the aerial picture - it told the tale. Hope you like blackberries because killing them is about impossible - might as well just control them LOL! I look forward to seeing it once it is whipped into SFG shape.

Yes, some of the roots went down about 3 feet. I have dug every one out and seived every ounce of soil. Maybe a few little ones got through but I can soon get them when they show their little heads. I can't wait either but I have to be patient. £600 worth of fencing to do first then a greenhouse that I bought 6 years ago and never put up to erect. Then I can make a start on some boxes.

Welcome to the forum, Jumiclads. I agree, I'm tired just reading your post! By the time you are finished you will have more than earned the ease of SFG.

Thanks Ander217, I will put some progress photos up as soon as the weather here dries up a bit. Everytime I look out the window and think it looks a nice day the clouds come over and it starts raining. Once I get the fence done and get the greenhouse up I can sit in the greenhouse and laugh at the rain then it might get fed up and go elsewhere.

I did not think that it rained in England. Ah well, sometimes we have to put up with a little rain so we can get inside work done . In any case a great big southern U.S. hug and welcome to the SFG family.

Thanks for the welcome Ward & Mary. We get quite a bit of rain here. Usualy when its holidays or week ends. There were a few rivers running down the plot yesterday and then it froze last night. Got the new fencing coming next week so hopefuly it will clear up long enough for me and my son to plant 20 concrete posts. Got to hurry up to give you peeps something to look at rather than just a big pile of dirt.
