Carrots for Juiceing? Empty Carrots for Juiceing?

Post  WardinWake 10/26/2010, 6:16 pm

Howdy Folks:

We will be juicing carrots as soon as we get a proper juicer and we would like to grow the majority ourselves to be in control of what is put on the carrots then store bought. Others in our group who are juicing use up to 10 pounds of carrots per week. We have enough room to grow as much as needed, so that is not a concern. My question is what variety (s) of carrots should we grow to get that kind of harvest and produce the most/best juice? Thanks.

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

Very interesting and I have no idea, although I love carrot juice. I will be interested to see what you learn about it.

From http://www.seedsofchange.com/enewsletter/issue_59/carrots.aspx

The best juicing carrots are high in water content and lower in sugar than other types. High-sugar carrots tend to be too sweet as a juice. A great juicing variety is the Danvers-type Scarlet Keeper. Mature, topped carrots can be kept in storage without rotting for 4–5 months. Danvers and Chantenay types are the best for this purpose, with Scarlet Keeper and Red Core Chantenay being particularly good. Most of the commercial carrots are Imperator types because they have high fiber and hold up very well in the field, although their flavor is generally not as sweet as the other types.

Carrots for Juiceing? Empty Re: Carrots for Juiceing?

Post  WardinWake 10/29/2010, 1:24 pm

Howdy Folks and thanks ksroman.

So far my research on the web has yielded the following, most of the info gleamed from the World Carrot Museum website www.CarrotMuseum.com.

The healtiest carrot? The Juwarot variety has almost twice the beta carotene of regular carrots. Other higher then normal beta carotene carrots are Ingot, Beta Champ (good for juicing) and Healthmaster. Carrots also contain Alpha Carotene and Phytochemicals.

Yellow carrots contain xanthophyulls and lutenc. Red carrots contain lycopene. Purple carrots contain more beta carotene than most orange carrots and also contain anthocyanins, a flavonoid. Black carrots also contain anthocyanins.

I gather from this info we should plant all different colors and types of carrots along with our other veggies. Besides think of the comments that you will get when you take a platter full of different colored carrots to your next get together! What an opening for talking about Square Foot Gardening!

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

I know the different colored carrots I planted each had a slightly different flavor - kinda neat. I can't say one was a favorite, they were just each unique and you could actually tell them apart.

I found the following info after posting the above.

Juwarot seeds can be ordered from Bountiful Gardens.
Ingot seeds can be ordered from Hume Seeds.
Health Master from Backyardgardener.com

Park Seeds Co. has Yaya, Purple Haze, Rainbow and Tendersnax as well as other carrot seeds.
Cook's Garden has Purple Dragon, White Satin, Yellowstone, Touchon, and Napoli.
Baker Creek has Ammarillo, Atomic Red, Cosmic Purple, Danvers Half Long, Jaune Obtuse Du Doubs, Kurona Long, Lunar White, and St. Valery.

Other seed suppliers will have the same or simular so if you want to plant carrots in your SFG check around.

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

Carrots for Juiceing? Empty So.... Which Are You Growing?

Post  bettyd_z7_va 11/8/2010, 6:20 pm

Ward and Mary,

I'm in Central Va and should be able to grow the same kinds that you do without trouble. I'm very interested to know which ones you are going to grow.

I love the idea of growing lots of different colored carrots. The DGKids will enjoy them, I'm sure. I'll try anything to get more healthy veggies in them.

Betty:

We planted a 2X2 of unknown carrots last spring. We used a marker in our squares that washed out in the first rain. We currently have 'just sprouted' two types of carrots in a 3X5 that were seeds left over from the spring planting. Only time will tell if the winter cold will allow them to grow. The seed was cheap to start with so I figured, what the heck, go ahead and plant and see what happens.

As far as the spring planting goes we will plant several from each color and see what grows best. And use a marker that does not wash away!

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

Carrots for Juiceing? Empty Carrot Updates

Post  bettyd_z7_va 11/22/2010, 5:05 pm

Ward and Mary,

I can't wait to hear about how the carrots turned out.

Keep me posted. What kind you ordered, from where, etc.

I've got to order some of those for spring planting to tempt the Gkids with.

Thanks,
Betty

Post  duhh 11/22/2010, 5:55 pm

I'm growing:
dragon carrots(red), cosmic (purple), and a blend that should have yellow, red, white, orange, and purple.
I'll post pics when they actually mature. They've only been in for about 7 weeks or so.

My nephew is very excited to see what they look like and how they taste. Everytime he comes over he has to go see them and can't wait to pick one.
