Kauai - I had no idea of your age but would have guessed in your thirties by your posts I want to be you when I grow up!
I have 5 table tops. 3, 4x4's and 2, 4x8's I love how easy it is to sit down and weed in the large ones (they're about 16 inches off the ground. The other 3 are 3' off the ground. So easy!!!!

Re: Table tops take SFG to a higher level!
I'm building a 2'x4' TT. I've already got a 4'x8' sheet of 1/2 inch OSB (Oriented Strand Board) sheathing stored in my garage. I'm thinking of using two pieces for the bottom of the TT.
Does anyone know if OSB can be used for the bottom of a Table Top? It's composed of flakes of wood compressed together with adhesives and waxes.

Angle it down a little for drainage, brace it in a few places across the bottom, and cover it in heavy plastic. IMHO, it wouldn't last a year just used as is, but I'm not an expert.trolleydriver wrote:I'm building a 2'x4' TT. Re: Table tops take SFG to a higher level!
Another advantage to TT gardening is if you're short like me. I tried a 4x4 on the ground and couldn't reach in 2' without leaning on one arm. I can weed one-handed, but I can't do anything else that way. With a TT, I just bend from the waist and reach in with both hands to do whatever is needed. LIFE IS GOOD!
Re: Table tops take SFG to a higher level!
I had to weed a front flower bed today. I forgot how ground weeding gave me acid reflux. Love TTs!
TD, I wouldn't use OSB. It doesn't hold up to wetness as well as plywood and doesn't return to original size after drying. I know some folks have used it but you asked, and I gave my humble opinion.

Thanks sanderson. I'll go with the plywood.

Re: Table tops take SFG to a higher level!
I personally would never use that in my beds,, even treated outdoor plywood would tend to come apart in a short time.countrynaturals wrote:Angle it down a little for drainage, brace it in a few places across the bottom, and cover it in heavy plastic. It will never dry out, always be subject to rot..why not try deck planking, easy to work with and not very expensive..

It's that 5/4 treated deck plank, very common all over

Re: Table tops take SFG to a higher level!
My first "table top" garden box - ok, so it's not at all, but it is elevated above ground, and it has wheels, since the only place I have for it is right where the snow gets plowed in the winter. Still, all it would need would be legs for it to be a table top garden, and I'm pretty darned proud of it!

The wheelbarrow and tarp etc. is the neighbor's mess -not mine! The construction mess in the driveway is mine, but it did go away. And how on earth do I get the photo with the car right-side-up?

Looks good but what is the purpose of slanting those two boards.

Yolos, Quick diagonal bracing sans the special cuts at the 2 ends? Nice, Martha.

Martha
The program you added images to your computer probably has a rotation selector, usually a curved arrow in either direction. or any photo editor will also rotate images.

Thank you, Ralitaco!
Yes, it was an iphone. And yes, the diagonal braces are for additional support.

Apple uses a different photo format. If you open your pictures on a pc in Windows Photo Viewer and rotate them, they should save in the correct rotation, but not always.
Also, what is the black material you used for the bottom?
