Guess what I'm going to be doing tomorrow?

There's about a peck and a half of our WV '63 tomatoes and about a half peck of the Opalka paste type. I have them sorted by ripeness.

A few pinkish-red Early Wonders in the white box. They were not early, but they are are getting ripe all at once (determinates). They are not a very big tomato and kind of seedy, but the taste is okay.

Let's see...the peck basket is the oldest..., it was from a u-pick strawberry farm we used to go to. The white peck box was from the peaches we bought last week. The little half peck baskets are from a u-pick blueberry farm. And the sturdy brown box is a blueberry box too. I got that from a farmers market. It's ventilated and makes a good ripening container for 'maters.

Aside from being frugal, they're good gauges as to how many jars I need to wash!

you know, I think that's one of the most rewarding things about putting things by...it's great to have produce from your garden all winter, but the site of all those jewel-toned jars lined up on a shelf with their shining golden lids is a visual pat on the back...and always makes me smile every time I open the downstairs cupboard.

29 tomato plants:
    12 WV '63 (indeterminate, all purpose, heirloom)
    12 Opalka (indeterminate, paste, heirloom)
    4 Early Wonder (determinate, small early tomato, heirloom)
    1 Sweet 100 cherry tomato plant just for salads


I can tomatoes hot pack style for general use, soup, pizza sauce and salsa. Last year I grew only 12 WV '63 tomatoes for canning, but I still had enough make the aforementioned and we ate lots of them too! I have no canned tomatoes left, 6 half paints of salsa, and one quart of tomato soup. This year I hope to do more, and add a marinara sauce to the list. I also want to just freeze some of the paste tomatoes for use in recipes. I'm going to try to remember to keep track of yield this year!

I have enough tomatoes coming in on 7 plants to put up over time but I am thinking of buying a bushel or more to put up by canning because I really prefer to do most of it all at once...

Didn't get to can those tomatoes until yesterday morning. 12 pints plain canned tomatoes and 6 3/4 pints pizza sauce. Save back some of the tomatoes for eating. Smile

Awesome !!!! That is the prettiest picture, just like when see the first tiny little green tomato, I look for it after the flower drops so I see the minuscule ones!! This pic says "ahhhhhhh" I can take a break and enjoy the scenery!!! I love it

I wish I could can!
I'm SO busy at my salon... I'm up to my eyeballs in Eyelash Extensions!! The only time I get to play in the garden is on Thursdays and then I have to keep an eye on the kids and dogs too. Maybe next year when I'm all switched over to SFGs and somehow I'm not so swamped at the shop. Wishful thinking!

Beautiful!!! Before and after canning!!! My tomatoes didn't turn out nearly as nicely as yours did. I'm so happy for you - and thanks for the pictures!
