Post  camprn 8/2/2010, 9:11 pm

I have not exhibited at the Fair for 15 years but today I took 5 ripe Striped Roman and 5 Green Gilbertie tomatoes, 1 pint each of Bread and Butter pickles, pickled beets and a 1/2 pint of Peach conserve and entered all into the Cheshire County Fair for judging today. Fingers crossed for a ribbon and a $5 prize.
Side note: in crafts, sadly there was not a category for my stained glass Sad hopefully that will change next year.

Well that sounds like fun. Do ribbon winners move on up to the State Fair? Are you sharing the winning recipes? Will you send me cukes and toms to hang on my trellises? (just kidding rofl )

I am sorry about your cukes and toms but I am holding out hope for a good month for y'all in the NW~
There is no automatic entry to the state fair if you win at county. Really, besides the ribbon if you win, the best thing about entering at the fair is the 1/2 price entrance fee for the fair itself, including the Demo Derby Very Happy

Second place for pickled beets, Second place for pickles, second place for conserves. The prize basically pays for the fair entry for the week, not bad. Very Happy Sadly nothing for the tomatoes, the judges like to have all the fruit and vegetables a uniform size, :suspect: oh well, maybe next year.

Prince William County fair. I have been reading their website for a while this year. I have never actually been to it before. They have two deadline submissions for perishables. The real issue, if I actually try for it, is getting time off from work for it.

Thank you for the encouragement... you enabler, you! Very Happy

I've been looking at my garden and wondering what I could submit. There is an 'oddity' category (not their term) that I was considering trying the rampicante. I have a MONSTER hanging off my trellis. Have not put a tape to it lately but I know it's over 30". Don't think it could make it in a general squash category (??) because it's so big that unless it is hanging from a trellis it curls up in a randomly-shaped coil, and I have only one of the big ones right now. Then there is my amaranth, which again I haven't put a tape on, but it too is huge. It's lost a few leaves but wow it's so pretty with the developing seed heads, to me anyway.

However...the two carrots I've pulled a few weeks ago were remarkably the same size, and while I haven't even touched the limas yet, I have hopes for them....? We'll see.

I haven't tried canning yet, but my cukes are crying out for it.

Congratulations on your wins.
I love the fairs. I don't enter anything, but I love the exhibits, food and livestock. I especially like to check out the chickens.
We have one the last week of Sept and the other close to me on the other side of the map is the 1st week of Oct. I plan to go to both.

Congratulations! I just love county fairs, but have never tried to enter one. How about posting your peach conserve recipe in the recipe section? I just pulled the late peaches and they are pretty horrible, but will do fine in salsa or conserve. To date I've put up 22 pints of salsa, so time to switch to something else.

Congrats! It all looks so pretty! Do they judge by the looks of it or do they do a taste test? You get the blue in my book, and the honey, ah, I bet the taste is best in show!

Jo,that's sweet, thanks. Canning is judged on looks, quality, USDA canning guidlines. The honey is judged on clarity, taste, presentation and a few other rules I'm not really sure about. Very Happy
