Corn Harvesting

I am wondering when to harvest corn? Some of the silks are turning brown but the ears are skinny and don't feel like there are any kernels. I can't believe they didn't get pollinated. Between me and the wasps and the bees and the wind there is no way. Do I wait 'til the silks are completely brown? I am leaving town in 3 days for two weeks - maybe just see what I've got when I get back?

Chopper,

I usually say "HUH", or "Wow" or just Corn Harvesting 601593

when I am in the garden.

It has been quite a number of years since I planted corn. As I remember we waited until the silks were completely brown and shriveled up. I hope someone else can help.

Big storm came through last night. Lots of wind and lightning and a downpour of heavy rain. It is just now daylight so I can see if the garden is OK.

All my corn turned out to be "runts" - even with hand pollinating them. This pic makes them look bigger than they really are -- none more than 2 inches long and 1/2 inch in diameter.

Most of my garden is a big disappointment this year... very little harvested so far.

When the silks turn dark and dry and the ears feel filled out, carefully peel the shucks back just a bit on one side of an ear and push your fingernail into a kernel. The kernel should be tender and full of milky juice. If it isn't ready yet, pull the shucks back up and wait another day or two. Corn can quickly get too hard once the silks dry.

With practice you'll pretty much be able to tell by looking and feeling when the ears are ready, but I still usually check to make sure before stripping the ear from the stalk.
