Vertical Netting

I read some posts on netting recently and I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this. Why not make your own netting. I finally found netting(supposedly nylon) locally and paid $6-$8 for a 4x15 pack. Within 2 months they both were breaking down. For about $2-3 I bought a roll of 8 lb. mason string and made my own netting for about 4 frames. It is a little time consuming but it's held up so far. Plus it will be stronger than what I had for my cantaloupe and watermelons(15 lb mason line).

Last year I used garden twine and didn't care for it.
This year I bought the netting as you described and it's been fine for my sugar snap peas so far.
Thanks for the info on the mason line tho. That might be a way to go next year.

I got trellis netting at Home Depot, it was roughly $3.50 per trellis. I admire the idea of making your own netting, though!

Hey Boffer...I wasn't a Hippie but I learned how to do marcrame......many long years ago. Vertical Netting Icon_biggrin

I made two items and that was it.

Here is a picture of one of the trellis' I made with the masonry twine. It is super easy to do. They are just over under each strand.

I made my own, cotton twine so it's compostable.

I know some basic macrome. The trellis's look great. You were very neat with your 4 knot, and I love the round hoops. I used the Home Depot trellis netting and it's been great so far for the peas, and I'm funneling my tomatoes through it...so far so good. I have my pumpkins trellised on 8 feet of chicken wire, stapled to two by twos and rigged to my kid's play set. So far so good, but there's no fruit yet. LOL

I was going to make my trellis netting, but I decided I didn't have the time or patience for it anymore. I hadn't done any macrame since the late seventies.... no... patience is not my strong point!

(come on, tomatoes, get ripe, will ya!)

I have a bit of OCD at times LOL I need things to fit perfectly and be nice and tight. Since I had 2 different shapes (the hoop and a 10' electrical conduit trellis) I also wanted make sure I was able to cover all bases. I also wanted something sturdy. If for some reason 1 strand does break I can easily replace the 1 strand, I think even with plants growing up it.

i too paid $5/trellis netting at home depot. it was actually $4.97+ tax. burpee brand. and i bought all 3 on the hook. wish i could have gotten more, but it is a limited stock item apparently in my town. . .

some day i hope to have the time to sit and do trellis netting myself, but right now, i'd go insane trying to keep the kids from helping while i do the stringing by hand. . .

This is what I got and it completely fell apart after a few months. Anyone else have that happen?

My Depot netting is doing fine, and it's under a very heavy load right now on one of my trellises. Hubby seems to think we will throw it out come this fall, but I want to re-use it if at all possible...even though I realize it'll be a pain to untangle everything for composting.

i'm on year two with all my original trellis' plus more.

as for untangling stuff - it's not that hard. esp if you cut plant at base and let it sit that way for a few days. it dries and shrinks a bit. then pull it off - it comes off in clumps.

I am only on my first year with the netting but so far it is the only one that has been able to stand up to the crazy thunderstorms we have had this year. the netting is holding strong while the other trellises have all blown over and need to be reset.

I hear you. Despite the rebar, one of my trellises is leaning with the weight of the plants on it. I used 2 foot sections of rebar and am thinking now that 4 foot might have done better. But, it's still upright and doing its job!

I just today spied a pole bean climbing the tassel of my tallest corn plant (around 9-10 ft). Silly thing!

The rebar and conduit method wasn't possible in my case since my SFG is on my roof. I used bamboo rods held to the outside of my SFG boxes with pipe strapping, and strung with cheap garden neting I found at the dollar store. So far I only have peas climbing the trellis, but so far so good. It yields a bit in the wind, which is what I wanted. It may not stand up to heavy produce, but it's working ok for me at the moment and my total investment in the trellis was about $2.

I'm using a heavy duty plastic chicken wire for my verticals this year--"poultry fencing", as it is apparently now called. Holes are rectangular, 1"x2", and its green so it blends well. No knots, no sharp edges!

I've seen from some of the pictures that some people use netting and some use what looks like cattle fencing panels attached to conduit or fence poles. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using netting vs. galvanized fence panels? I'll be setting up my SFG boxes next week (all the rain we've gotten this week pushed out the delivery of my bulk compost), and am trying to think through how I will set up my trellises.

Hi Mason,

After weighing my options I decided to go with nylon netting. First of all, it is what Mel recommends and what he says he uses exclusively. If it is good enough for him it's good enough for me. Secondly, it is cheaper than using fence panels. My netting cost me just over $3 per 5'x8' net. Thirdly, I don't have to worry about rust or sharp edges. Lastly, the openings in the netting are 4"x4". That give me room to be able to reach through and harvest what I need to as well as reach into the third row to harvest there if I must.
