My granddaughter Alicia is 13, step-granddaughter who recently joined us, Jennifer, is 17.
I've got chickens. I went to the barn to get eggs, stopped by the potato
patch to see if there were any taters ready, brought 2 in, about twice the size
of an egg. I showed them to the girls & said "Wow, the chickens have
started laying potatoes now!" They actually studied them for several
seconds & finally Jen said, No, you dug those up didn't
you? Sorry state of affairs that they had to think about
it. Somebody please lock my account so I can't post any more until tonight. I am 2 hours late starting to type at my 'real' job.

I wasn't here when you first posted this, so I'll chime in now.

I read somewhere that Grandchildren are our gift from God as a reward for not killing our kids when they were driving us crazy growing up!!

They are my reward for having to deal with all the aches and pains of old age. They keep me young(er) and love me unconditionally.

My precious 7 year old DGSon helped me make hot pepper jelly Sat morning when I wasn't feeling well, but had to get it done or lose the peppers I had ground up the night before.

I could have done it so much easier and faster by myself, but I would have missed the love. It was worth every extra minute and all of the extra mess.

You should have heard how proudly he told his parents that he 'helped' Nanny make the jelly. (Can you tell he has me wrapped around his little finger?)

They are so trusting that it is easy to 'get one over' on them. Isn't it fun?

I can just see your DGDaughters faces while they were processing what you said! lol

I fully agree! (but it was really hard sometimes not to). These girls have been pure joy.

I'm glad this got bumped up, I had forgotten about it.

Dixie:

The next time you bring in the eggs ask the Gchildren if they can tell which of the eggs are rooster eggs and which ones are hen eggs. A varations of this question was asked at a local supermarket and the cashier did not know so she asked several other employees before she found one who knew the right answer!

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

potatoes versus eggs 889526 I don't doubt it one bit. Several times I've bought veggies at the grocery & young clerk asked what it was so she could check the price. I remember once it was celery.

I still remember how excited I was to find my first eggs from the flock of hens I had when I was in 4-H. What fun! Smile

We did an exhibition at a local mall one time, and I brought one of my hens. I heard so many adults telling their kids "oh, look at the rooster!" that I finally put a sign on the cage saying it was a hen, not a rooster. Apparently the farmer folk in the audience found that (plus my youthful scrawl) to be 100% hilarious..... Embarassed

Thats a cute story, and (unfortunately?) is todays reality.

I just had my nieces (wife's sisters daughter) birthday party at my house.

My family is all crackers & I'm the first generation to be born "off the farm" and do something besides farming/agg and/or cattle. My wife is from Long Island & I don't think had ever seen something edible grow in dirt, until she started dating me.

Soo .. we have this gaggle of kids over at the house for the party.

- Video consoles set up in three rooms for the kids
- Bounce-house
- All the latest/coolest kids tv shows playing on the TV's
- DVR with every kids movie that they might want to see

..... figured we had the "child entertainment" all taken care of

... One of the little ones had some "sharing issues" with a video game inside the house and their parents took them outside for a break. The child came back in the house and screamed ..... "they have real food growing out of the dirt outside".

It absolutely emptied the house of kids and shut down the birthday party for a bit & I spend almost an hour explaining everything in the garden & then cajoling the kids to go back inside for the party.

Kinda funny, kinda sad .....

I'm a city kid and I remember visiting some country distant cousins when I was about 6 give or take some months and left alone to play out on the ranch (to small to be a farm) with my new found cousins, so we gathered eggs and harassed some live stock (great fun to them) and me as it was all new until the turkey. Let me tell you about a turkey in a pen, I was talked into harassing that bird just for the fun of it (we do it all the time) sure they do, well they opened the door and I go in there to chase that bird and have fun doing it but that thing turned into a demon and chased me around jumping and flapping trying to kill me. Someone heard all the commotion and got gullible me out of there. I learned a big lesson that day so did my new found cousins.

Oh no!!! Laughing Thank goodness it was only a turkey, and not a goose.... Come to think of it, I don't know if turkeys are as ornery as geese are, but I do know you do NOT mess with geese. Those guys will cheerfully break your arm.

I can't remember getting suckered into anything, but I did accidentally touch an electric fence one time. Not the kind of thing you do twice. My oldest sister's fiance did get suckered by my other sister, though. One evening he was trying to get a good look at the stars and she told him to go climb that little hill over there.... which he did, and praised her for the great view up there. It was fairly cold out, so it took a while for the smell to make itself apparent. (Yup, he climbed up our manure/compost pile, which at the time was probably 12+ feet tall!)

dixie, no I never fell for snipe hunting but I did play that game with my son, I felt bad and had to get him after a little while. I would really love to live in the country now though, I can see it now, green house, garden space and a lake near by to go fishing. All that great air and space, what a life !
