Hello All!

It's a humid Saturday morning and, while watching my favorite local news channel, they had a report on Square Foot Gardening. It's part of their Going Green segment, where they inform viewers on, what else, how to go green. Hello from DC! Icon_biggrin

I'm painfully aware of my need to improve my eating habits Hello from DC! Icon_rolleyes but, because my budget is tight, I find that the fruit and vegetables at the store are way too expensive to maintain a healthy lifestyle Hello from DC! Icon_sad . So, I was really intrigued when I heard about square foot gardening.

Another drawback is that I currently live in an apartment so I didn't think I would be able to garden until I bought a home. I don't have a green thumb at all but, I'm willing to try it and I'm glad there is a forum to help through the process. Hello from DC! Icon_cheers

Look forward to chatting with you on the boards. Hello from DC! Icon_smile

Welcome Cheryl,

We all have our reasons for growing our own veggies, and inexpensive nutrition is one that is frequently mentioned. We've been seeing more and more apt. dwellers getting into sfg. Either by creative use of the space they have available at their apts., participating in community gardens, or just 'borrowing' space at a friend's house or church or school-folks are finding ways to get it done. With sfg, there's no longer a reason you can't grow your veggies too.

We're here to help so ask lots of questions; we learn from your questions, too.

Hi from NJ

My son and his fiancee also live in DC in an apt/condo.
For now, they are growing basil in a long container. (The apt complex - small - has a large patio for everyone's use such as grilling, planting in containers, etc).

You can build a small sq ft garden 2x4 or 2x6.

They are purchasing a Townhouse in DC this summer.
In the front of the house they have some land and I told them I could help them with a Sq Ft Garden to put veg's and herbs. Or the back of the house we can make one for the patio.

There are ways to apply to the situation.
Did you see the post about a woman growing a 6" garden in the apt/home?

Best of luck.

Happy Gardening Everyone....

Hi Cheryl,
Welcome to SFG Hello from DC! Icon_cheers
I'm a fellow Washingtonian too Hello from DC! Icon_wink
There are some very informative videos on youtube.com about self-watering containers. I chose to try the self-watering buckets for some tomatoes, and they have shot up like rockets! I use the 2L soda bottles and make self-watering containers for smaller plants and cuttings.
