To appreciate this you have to bear in mind that normally at this time
of year I have not planted anything!
Icemaiden, That is just beautiful !!! So pretty green, what herbs for the omellete? chives I see, is that a mint I see and then there is some tiny herb. I like to hear how folks use their herbs.

Congrats !! on your harvest

Started late, so harvest has been small so far. Just enough lettuse and spinach to create what my wife called a "saledette" Any harvests yet? - Page 2 Icon_rolleyes . Today I cut off one small broccoli head that was starting to get loose and it looked like the flowers would start to come out any day now. Devoured it before I was out of the fence. Was not bitter at all Any harvests yet? - Page 2 Icon_biggrin !!!

Looking to get much more soon.

Thanks Any harvests yet? - Page 2 Icon_biggrin There was a bit of thyme in there too so a thyme and chive omelette, with cheese. And then chives and melissa in the salad.

And wow! L&K that is a real salad, and what a lovely garden!

Already harvested all my radishes 2 wks ago, and now I'm raking in tons of lettuce. I made BLT's last night and my son said, "Where's the lettuce?" I smiled contentedly and said to him, "Follow me out to the garden." That was such a cool moment. Any harvests yet? - Page 2 Icon_cool This is my first (but definitely not last) time growing anything successfully.
My "maters" have tons of blooms, but nothing else yet. I was surprised to learn that cilantro doesn't last very long, so I'll have to make more boxes to keep up the continuous harvest.
Does anyone else slow down at construction sites to look for wood or is it just me?

We've enjoyed lots of strawberries since this first few:

Any harvests yet? - Page 2 Img_6012

And we've picked many green onions for my FIL-we don't eat them but I grow them for him... they're his fav!

I have lots of lettuce that has produced like crazy but has gone bitter.

I haven't pulled it up yet b/c it seems to be keeping my unwanted slugs busy. I figure if they're on my lettuce then they're not eating my other plants that I want to keep them away from.

Here's what we enjoyed before it went bitter-

My broccoli is coming along nicely but I'm not sure when to harvest it. How big should it be approx before chopping it? Here's a pic of it about a week ago, so it's a little bigger than this right now

Any harvests yet? - Page 2 Img_6016

Any thoughts on how much longer I should wait??

Love seeing everyone's yummies!! Just think what we'll all be enjoying in another month or two Any harvests yet? - Page 2 Icon_smile

Don't pick it yet, as long as it isn't toooo hot it will get pretty big. I had the same problem. I kept wondering when I should cut my crowns. I just kept a close eye on them and the temperature and when they got to be a big size and looked like they wanted to start flowering (it was in the low 90's ) I decided to cut the crown. I had two beautiful broccoli crowns and I am glad I didn't cut them sooner. My crowns where as big as the ones in the store. They seem to grow fast once the heads start so give them a few more days or weeks. As long as it isn't very hot. They don't seem to mind the upper 80's at all. Good Luck and beautiful garden.

Thanks, LT!

I moves it to under my covered porch so it only get late afternoon/evening sun when it's not as hot. And the direct sun is limited there so I was hoping that would help.

I also noticed that it slows down considerably if it's dry. That broccoli of mine sure likes it's water! Speaking of that, I probably need to give it some Smile

Can't wait to enjoy that broccoli! I keep hearing everyone talk about how yummy they are homegrown; excited to hold my own taste test!!

Yes, lots of water. Mine always grew lots just after a good rain. The rain is so much better for it, no matter how much water you give it, it seems to grow better with the rain.

Howdy Folks:

We harvested 4 squares of green onions in the middle of a 3X3 box yesterday. Made soup with some and shared the rest with good neighbors. We then mixed in more compost and planted squash seeds in those squares.

We harvest strawberries each day. With this amount of harvest on spring plants we should be able to share/sell next year.

Lettuce box in the sun is doing fine. The lettuce box under the shade tree continues to do well as well. Carrots are slow. Tomatoes are just starting to produce a few small fruit and we saw our first bell pepper yesterday.

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

Today I shared a salad of leaf lettuce, spinach and baby beet greens with my daughter and the little boy I sit. The baby beet greens were actually from thinning my beets after planting them a couple of weeks ago. I figured, why waste them!

I have harvested all my radishes- they were huge (larger than store bought), lots of lettuce and swiss chard and strawberries. but the surprise of the Spring was harvesting the "volunteer" potatoes that were crowding my strawberries. There were way more potatoes then I expected and they were delicious.

Have gotten about 10 potatoes so far. Got them from two plants that weren't looking so hot.

A few strawberries, carrots, beets and green beans - nothing like Josh yet! And two tomatoes.

Post  lwcommunitygardner 7/10/2010, 11:23 pm

I know this is an old post, but I got planted late and I'm so excited to report that we had our 1st wonderful pea pods today. We are munching them raw. So firm and crisp! I picked a few green beans, but later this week there should be a ton of them. Snipped our 1st lettuce, too. I've been buying produce from a CSA-type setup and actually wondering if I wasted my $$ on SFG this year. Watching DDs picking produce today made me remember I'm planting my own so they learn where food comes from more than anything. The financial pain was a 1 yr hit and it will be nearly free next year, so staying the course makes so much sense.

I have 1 zucchini coming. Sure hope more come along. A few of my cukes are looking better and have blossoms. My tomato plants were much smaller than most of the others within the community garden, but they've really sized up. Don't see blossoms though... so hoping they produce. My peppers are so-so. A few plants are heartier than the others, so fingers crossed. I have a few empty squares. I'm going to plant some chives and definitely want to put in garlic this fall after watching other posts on here.

Our garden has 8" fence and it has taken some hits these past 2 weeks. We are in heavily wooded development adjacent to a massive wooded park, so critters of all sizes are in our midst. Hopefully we can keep everyone out that is not welcome.

This has been the best garden year ever for us. We've had two pickings of chard, got three pickings out of the spinach before it bolted, all the scallions we've needed, a head of cabbage for cole slaw, and last night: a Thai salad of cucumbers, green onions, jalepeno pepper, and baby carrots (from the thinning), along with zucchini cooked on the grill.

Now if only I could quite worrying about my tomatoes - which have great vines & flowers but don't seem to be setting very much fruit (just 3 baby tomatoes so far)

Garden is doing great! My bulb onions are about 3" diameter and the tops are beginning to dry, I have a gallon ziplock bag in the fridge of basil to take to work, the peppers are producing exponentially, the beans are beginning to bloom and I have lots of green grape tomatoes and blooms and a couple of beefsteak tomatoes and blooms. I am very pleased.
