Okie....

Do I need mulch? And what kind do I buy?

How tall of a trellis will I need for a cantaloupe? Will 6 foot be enough?

I'm sure I have some more totally newb questions. I'll add them when I remember what they were!

I like some mulch under some items like tomatoes and peppers but I use dried grass clipping. One of the few things I don't buy.

I figure a 6 foot trellis is my limit b/c I am not willing to haul a ladder out to the garden to harvest melons. I will let gravity handle it and when it reaches the top, it can just go down the other side.

Oh! My cucumber leaves are starting to look a little yellow. Any ideas on why?

Sometimes older leaves just yellow and die. However, yellowing generally indicates a nutrient deficiency. There are several different deficiencies that show themselves as yellowing leaves. I would just feed it a broad spectrum vegetable food. I use gypsum, epsom salts, fish emulsion and miracle grow because that is what I have on hand. ph can be an issue too, the wrong ph can prevent nutrients from being absorbed, but with mel's mix that is unlikely.

Well, the cucumbers are in my son's Boy Scout project box. No Mel's Mix in there. It's "Garden Soil" from "Jungle Growth". It was built before I bought Mel's book.

Im using Jungle Growth veggie mix in one of my boxes, the plants in that box turned yellow I started feeding them. I dont have a good compost of my own yet. They have greened up, I also gave them some epsom salts to help them take in their nutrients a bit better. I have manure but its not ready for prime time, so the only thing would be for me to make a tea. I can have that ready in a week or so or buy miracle grow, I dont want to buy anymore though.
