Getting my Garden Ready... Need help refreshing my memory.

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on the forum. We had our first SFG last year, and it was moderately successful (our location wasn't quite right). We are planning on moving our boxes tomorrow or Wednesday, and then we'll get our plants installed.

I can't remember if you are supposed to add more compost or any of the other components to Mel's Mix before you replant. We didn't plant anything over the fall or winter, so our soil has just been sitting since last Thanksgiving. My copy of the book is missing in action, so any advice would be great! Thanks!

I believe it is the compost you add every year.

Thanks! Do you know how much compost you are supposed to add to each square?

I believe the book says 'a trowel full for each square' (I'd be good with two or three trowels if need be) but if your soil has settled and won't fill the box, you might want to consider adding more Mel's Mix. Once you move your boxes and put the soil back in, you'll be better able to tell what you need, since in moving it, the soil will 'fluff up'. Here's to your new garden location!

Add at least one trowel full of compost per square. I would just add enough to bring the mix in the box up to the level you want it. There should be no concern about too much compost.
