Compost Mix?
Hi! My name is Alana. This is my first time SQUARE FOOT gardening, and I am very excited. Since I don't yet have a compost pile up and running, I need to rely on bagged compost to make my first Mel's Mix. I'm not sure if it's my area or supply chain issues, but finding bagged compost, particularly OMRI listed bagged composts, has been challenging. After striking out at Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, and several local Gardening Centers, I finally found a local supplier with some OMRI composts. Unfortunately, the supplier does not have any composts made out of vegetation this season, and some of the composts I purchased contain Peat Moss. I was able to get the peat to compost ratio, so I can adjust the amount of peat that I add to the MM. Below, is a list of what I was able to get and how much of each that I am planning to use. I'm hoping that I'm on the right track with mixing these compost that are available to me. Could you just confirm that I am on the right track and not going crazy?!? Thank you.
(55% of compost blend for MM) Coast of Maine Quoddy Blend
(20% of compost blend for MM) Baccto the Cow composted manure
(20% of compost blend for MM) Mushroom Compost
(5% of compost blend for MM) Earthworm Castings

Re: Compost Mix?
Alana, Welcome to the Forum from CA!
I sounds like you did some research since you are reducing the Fluffed peat moss to account for the peat moss filler in Coast of Maine and Baccto the Cow composted manure. In fact, I bet you could really, really reduce the 1/3 FPM down to 1/5 or 1/6. It seems that OMRI composts are always blends instead of pure composted materials. An expensive way by buy peat moss but a good way for the companies to make a profit.
We love photos, so don't be shy to share your journey.

Re: Compost Mix?
Hello, Alana, I'm new here, too. So I bought a Coast of Maine "Growers Mix" yesterday. Yes, I knew it has some peat moss and filler... I wrote it down (called the company), don't have it with me. Like you, finding OMRI or approaching it is hard now.

Re: Compost Mix?
Thank you for the warm welcome everyone! And thank you Sanderson for helping confirm the FPM adjustments! Filled bed number one with MM this past weekend. Hoping seeds come in in time to plant some this coming up weekend!
