De-fuzzing the lettuce seed
I let my merveille lettuce go to seed. I've already started growing some more. This canister is about 6 inches high.
Picking all the fuzz off would be really tedious. Is there a pro trick for removing it? Per the Book, I'll be giving it a home in the fridge. So it would be handy if it could fit in something smaller.
Thanks!

Put the seed heads in a paper grocery bag, and add a half dozen or so pennies. Fold over the top of the bag so that it is totally closed, then shake the bag fairly wildly in all directions so that the coins bounce through all of the seed heads. When you feel that you have probably shaken most of the seeds free of the head, cut one corner off the bottom of the bag to create a hole of about 3/8" or 1/2". Tilt the bag in the direction of the hole and dump the seeds into a bowl or pan - you will need to lightly shake the bag to keep the seeds falling towards the hole.

It's like the fuzz on dandelions -- it's the plant's way of making the seeds airborne so they will propagate further.

I'll have to try this. Finally! A use for pennies!
