It is what I am NOT doing that cheers me up.  Today I picked what I think is the last apple from my tree that has given me the most wonderful harvest ever. There was also some new bear scat and this year as the huckleberries in the mountains were prolific, the bears did not need to come into town to eat our fruit but I am afraid they will be here now until they have to hibernate. I spent six weeks working on those apples.  Next year, if I am still here in Canada,  I intend to severely prune that tree so that there will be fewer apples and so more manageable.  I do hate wasting things, even though I will give them away to the many people who appreciate them.

At the moment I have several pounds of pears that need to ripen before I process them, so I am taking a break from preparing fruit for drying.

We had our first overnight sub-zero temperature and this afternoon it will be sunny with temps up to 13C, a comfortable warmth for turning out my garden shed that really is overstuffed with lots that can be put in the garbage next week.

So this time I will be doing a three month stint of this Canadian thread, then repeat in the first three months of 2020.

So far the snow has missed us here in my small town in the Southern Interior, but to leave the town to travel West or East  there are mountain passes to go through and there has been snow in the passes and many people have been caught short by not having their winter tires on so there have been many car crashes; so please everyone, get your winter tires on ASAP or do not drive over the mountain passes.

At least, that's a ton better than mouse scat in the living quarters, basement or storage! (deer mouse feces!)

And the small town you're in, makes me think of Springfield, Vermont, if you go west or east, at least except towards Claremont, New Hampshire, you better watch out for snow or ice! Going west tends to be worse, as we got Mount Holly and other high elevations!

At least bear scat can go onto the compost heap as it is mostly fruit and vegetation.

Today I have spent three hours clearing my garden shed, cleaning the lawnmower, cleaning the empty pots and getting rid of the damaged ones, digging out the snow shovel and the electric snow shovel that only takes the light fluffy stuff but is easy to use.

It is amazing how much stuff is in one's shed that you have forgotten about and how much yucky stuff accumulates.  I cleared the surrounds first, then so far I have only managed half of the shed and if the weather is as nice as it is today, then I will be able to complete the job.  That is my punishment for not cleaning it out last year, it is twice as hard. :-)

Scorpio, most of them I dehydrated, they taste very nice and last a long time.  Some I will put into packets to add to my Christmas Gifts. I also can some to make apple sauce that can be eaten with yogurt or ice cream.

I was lucky enough to come across an old pear tree that was full of almost ripe pears.

The tree is situated along our railway track where I sometimes  take to town instead of the usual sidewalk, and over the course of several days I picked about thirty pounds and as they finished ripening, eating some and drying the rest and finding that dried pears makes a change from dried apples.

Last Saturday I bought six pounds of tomatoes from the Farmers' Market so I will be making organic tomato sauce/ketchup as  I had a packet of spices to use up.  I bought the tomatoes then had the job of finding the packet which I did after a couple days.

I have planted a bed of garlic so look forward to seeing them in the spring.  Other than that, just tidying the garden and getting rid of damaged plat pots and wishing that I had time to sort out the compost heap but tonight the rain is tumbling down  but just maybe I can get some compost to put down when the sun comes out later this week.

By the end of October, for sure, we will have our first snow.

Country Naturals:  You know, one can go off people!  Very Happy

Seriously, I can laugh at myself when I remember when I first moved into this little house with the too large garden, and I worked like mad to make it a beautiful place and I do have some photos to remember that garden. That was in addition to running a full time business.   But that was in 1996, some years ago.

I well remember  Anne, my next door neighbour, telling me not to do so much as she was in the same position when she first  had her house and became very well known for her lovely flowers which was mentioned in her obituary and I saw saw a display of her photos and finally realised why she said to ease up trying to make the hillside a garden as eventually it will get taken over by the next family living in that house.

She was right, as the next family took what was even then a well-kept garden and let it go to wrack and ruin and it still is.  She did make the mistake once of returning to look at her former home and garden and she was quite heartbroken.

I have told myself that once I leave this house and garden, I will never return, unless I get word from my friends that the new inhabitants are doing a good job.

yeppers I have no sentimental attachment to this new house, but the one next door is where Hubby did all the creative work (chicken coop, barn, out-buildings, cat hideaways, Salad Bar, etc). Katie and Stan have that property now and have no intention of ever leaving, so our legacy is as safe as we can make it. idk

CN:

In Canada I have no one I could leave this place to so I will sell it when/if I move back to England. While I am here I do have lots of lovely memories I am quite sure that when I am gone, the little house will be pulled down and a duplex built in its place like the one that is nearly finished just down the road from me.

Just finished skinning the six pounds of tomatoes I bought Saturday at the Farmers' Market; to  make home made organic tomato ketchup.

As I caught sight my my weigh scales, I decided to weigh the discarded skins.  They weighed one pound out of the six pounds of toms.

Mrs TD and I went to Gatineau Park in Quebec to see the Autumn colours.  The entrance to the park is about twenty minutes from our house. The park covers 140 square miles.

Beautiful, TD.

Our little town has quite a good display of different trees with different colour leaves.  It is a pleasure to walk around.  It only last for such a short time.

Also it is the same in the springtime with all the blossoms and fresh green leaves.

On Friday when I go to cast my vote at the Complex at other end of our long skinny town, I will take the bus at a certain time and get a free ride across the Columbia River to Robson, where I lived when I first came to Canada. then it circles back to Castlegar where it started  and then continues on to the Complex where the advanced voting takes place. I can get a good seat on the bus and be taken for several kilometers, about eight there and back, thereby saving my energy for gardening. I can also call in to my bank, then have coffee at the Senior's Centre and socialise for a bit.  The return bus is right outside the entrance.

Most of the trees I mentioned in my neighbourhood are the ornamental trees that are in peoples' gardens and the trees that our little city has planted over the years.

Travelling between places, it is mostly evergreens also with lots of larch trees.  When I first came to Canada and our first winter, I was very concerned that all the evergreens had turned brown and wondered why no one seemed to be bothered. It turned out that all these trees were Larch, and they lose their leaves in winter. During the leaf season I cannot tell the difference.

I know this is not SFG but a few days ago I was able to collect thirty pounds of pears from a lone tree by the railway track where I used to walk my Jazz.  They have now been processed, some of then canned and the others dried.

All to add to my store of apples from my tree, treated in the same way.

I have sufficient to keep me going for the best part of a year and also to give away to the food bank.

No where, Country Naturals, I just had trouble with my log-in as I completely lost my password that I have had since the beginning, and have been so busy that I never got around to finding it.  I did this morning.

I seem to be having trouble with computer problems especially Facebook has someone has been inserting posts that I never originated and I am now locked out of it, and in some ways I think I may give up Facebook completely as it is too much trouble.  What I do not like about FB is the way they keep pushing new friends on to you.  Most of my friends I contact via email and they are small in number, not hundreds.

Back to business:  No snow where I am in the Southern Interior of B.C. but some is due in a few days. I feel bad about everyone else in Canada, the USA, Australia etc, and the floods in England.  I hope our members in California are OK.

My garden is now tidied up but still need to do some pruning but somehow I think I will not get round to it.

All my apples and pears have been dried.  I have my freezer working again so I am getting back to batch cooking and planning my meals right up until I leave for England next year.  I intend to ea everything I have in the house to save money for my future.  Lots to do today as I will be attending our Remembrance Day service very shortly.

My brother has said he will help me set up a SFG when I finally get to England, and he has expressed great interest in it. I told him about our mutual cousins in Harrogate in the North of England, about the luscious  strawberries we had each day with our cereal and the different lettuce we had with our salads.
