Hola from Costa Rica
I gardened for 50 years in Texas and have used SFG for 30 of those.
I have retired to Costa Rica and will be creating my square foot gardens here (for year round gardening)
There are many things that are very different about gardening here however.
I will having to find alternatives for Mel's mix, also.

Welcome from Northern California! Mel mentions the "humanitarian method" which basically means to do the best you can with whatever you can get. (For me, that's leaves and rabbit poo -- plus compost, of course.) We'd love to see pics of your setup -- before, during, and after.
Hmm, from Texas to Costa Rica? Isn't that about an 8000% humidity differential?
compost only?
Hello GortKlaatu - How exciting! In October we went to CR for the first time celebrating my 50th birthday and it was amazing! We stayed in Manuel Antonio, and toyed with the idea of retiring in CR. I loved seeing all the wildlife and foliage! As far as gardening I live in S. Florida and it wouldn't be that much different climate-wise. It rained most of the time we were there and the only time I've seen so much rain was in a hurricane. Hopefully you can locate a source for vermiculite or perlite, coconut coir and compost. Even here I had difficulty finding a variety of composts like the book recommended. Hopefully you've already started making your own.
The master gardener who lent me Mel's book, and got me started...
...uses nothing but compost. Just a thought. Pura vida!

Re: Hola from Costa Rica
Hi Gort, Welcome to the Forum from California! As others have stated, just do the best you can in creating Costa Rica "Mel's Mix". The compost is the most important part.
