Is it too late?

I've been wanting a garden for a long time so when I found Mel's book at Lowe's a few weeks ago, my husband and I dove right in and built our planters and mixed the soil. We (foolishly) didn't really research anything else, thinking you just toss in some seeds and voila, instant garden. I know, I know. lol

I live in Central PA and it's been cold and icky, with frost threats as late as last week. It's only now that I'm realizing that it appears I've completely missed the boat as far as the growing season. Is there any way to plant things now and still have some semblance of a harvest or do I just continue to let the birds and squirrels dig in my boxes for this year and get cracking on seedlings early next spring?

It is NOT too late. In fact it is still early in the season.....chase those varmints outa there!

You are part of the Mid-Atlantic Region. We do not currently have a host for that area but it is an active board (Link--> Mid Atlantic ) Check out those who are in your zone. I am sure you will find help and encouragement.

Hi asingingdiva, welcome to the forum and good luck on your garden.

SFG is considered an "intensive" gardening method. Therefore as soon as one crop comes out, a new crop goes in all summer - right up until last frost. That means, there's almost always something ready and able to be planted.

I live in Texas and I'm absolutely new to SFG. When I ordered my SFG frame, there was a back order on vinyl so the frame didn't come in time for the first planting of the year (like peas and spinach) - so I started with plants that would normally have come second. I have a wonderful selection of herbs and veggies growing. With luck, I expect to have beans, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, beets and some carrots. But most significantly - I'm finding I REALLY ENJOY going out and working in my garden.

This forum has been exceptionally helpful. Everyone is friendly and very willing to share advice and information on their gardening techniques. I really appreciate it.

You are probably in zone 6a or 6b (you said central PA). You can plant almost anything you want , especially hot weather crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, peppers etc. Just buy seedlings at your local nursery or stores like Home Depot of Lowe's, and plant seeds of cucumbers or beans.

It is definitely not too late.
I planted my cucu, tom, etc. just a week ago.
In NJ we are suppose to plant the summer plants after May 15th. I did plant a few days earlier and of course stressed over whether or not frost would hit - luckily it didn't.
Anyway, plant away and enjoy.

This is also my first time plant a SFG garden.
