Is there ever enough compost?
Spring has purty much sprung down here last two days it hit 70*, Late last Fall I raided my compost pile and started the season with my city supplied 96 gallon recycle bin 3/4 full of home made compost it was just setting there empty, though I was in good shape for compost come Spring, today I had to raid the compost pile again.

IMO we can never have enough compost, especially when we start a new SFG bed.

This fall I set up two new raised beds with a total of 94Ft2, and I used every bit of homemade compost I had stored up, and now I'm trying to build up the store of compost again for next spring to top off the original beds.

Saw a good article by the Central Vermont Waste Management on making compost, titled "The Dirt on Composting". It is a 12-page PDF file, which you can save to your computer for later reading or for reference.

Re: Is there ever enough compost?
If you watch Dr. David C. Johnson videos or webinar he is just inoculating the cover crop seeds to start the process now in trials with amazing results. The inoculation slurry is made from milk, molasses and compost to the thickness of a pancake batter and from that he is increasing the amount of biomass every year. I will be asking OhioGardener a ton of questions on cover cropping as I have nil to none experience, soon.
i never thought one could use too much compost but apparently it is possible as the gentleman who runs one of the experimental farms that is part of the Extension service taught the vegetable growing module in the Master Gardener classes had to go a year of adding no compost after a soil test on his own gardening plots at his house. I can always use more compost but I am lucky enough the town has a fairly large leaf and yard waste composting program and is only about a mile away. A 30 gallon tote full cost a $1.
I believe compost is a very good thing and homemade compost even better but too much of a good thing can turn into a bad thing. Nature only adds a very thin layer in most places. I am taking more and more time to watch nature and when I can be more like nature.
