Re: Fourth Year SFG in Canada
Growing Yellow Giant toms for the first time. Harvested the first one and it weighs in at 15.2 ounces. They love Mel's Mix.
Also growing Yellow Ruffle toms for the first time.
Some of the Canada Crookneck Squash vines have exceeded the height of the 8 foot high megatrellis. Eat you heart out sanderson.
I thinned out the squares that are growing Leeks and ended up with this pile of little leeks.
My 3x3x3 Compost Bin is becoming inaccessible because of the squash growing in a mound of material that was to be composted plus some grass sod that was cut from the edges of the flower gardens.
Some tomato vines are exceeding the height of the trellises on the 4x4 SFG beds.
I love the look of freshly mowed grass.

One pound tomatoes? Runaway Canada Crookneck Squash? Green velvet grass? I'm un-friending you, TD.

Hmm, there's more "green" around here than just leaves.sanderson wrote:One pound tomatoes? Runaway Canada Crookneck Squash? Green velvet grass? I'm un-friending you, TD.

Harvested some kohlrabi. It's a strange alien like veggie that reminds me of the Russian Sputnik Satellite.

Harvested a couple of Yukon Gold potatoes. There are many more in the bed that was started last Fall as a lasagna garden, converted in the Spring to old style SFG, then planted with seed potatoes at one end and collards and broccoli at the other end. And then a volunteer squash popped.

Re: Fourth Year SFG in Canada
I've never had major problems with squash plants in the past but this summer it is a different story. I have been fighting Squash Bugs ... killing the adults and removing the eggs from leaves and squishing them. Then today I found an army of Squash Bug nymphs on one of my White Scallop Squash plants. Being away for ten days probably made the difference in that I could not remove the eggs.
A few weeks ago I was sure I saw an adult Squash Vine Borer flying near my Canada Crookneck Squash plants. When we got back from our ten day trip I noticed that one of my Golden Zucchini plants looked like it was dying. I pulled it today. When I cut open the stem there was the dreaded Squash Vine Borer grub (it is just above the B in the photo).
This is war!

Grab the DustBuster! It's the only way I can grab all of the babies and parents (but mine or the leaf-footed bug).

I grabbed a bunch of the nymphs using duct tape and sprayed some with soapy water (Dawn).sanderson wrote: Grab the DustBuster! It's the only way I can grab all of the babies and parents (but mine or the leaf-footed bug).

I planted 4 different types of pole beans around a bamboo stake teepee trellis. Now the plants are so intertwined I can't tell which is which.yolos wrote:trolleydriver wrote:Small harvest of yellow wax bush beans and rattlesnake (I think) pole beans.

I am getting better but on one of the flights I managed to make the drone crash behind the 3x3x3 compost bin.

I recently sowed seeds and the next day found that critters had dug up the squares. I created a mini cage out of hardware cloth big enough to cover one square.

Absolutely. It would be a good idea to make the cage smaller than a square so that it fits inside the grid. One warning ... Hardware cloth when cut can have some sharp points. Best to wear gloves when working with it.
