Beautiful, TD!trolleydriver wrote:Freezing temp, windy and a few snow flakes today. Can't do any gardening outside so I up potted these indoor Canada Crookneck Squash. Some of the leaves are 8 inches across and the plants stretch about 21 inches above the potting mix.
Re: Fourth Year SFG in Canada
Rhubarb is coming up in my regular soil garden. As well, two of my 42 Winter Sowing containers are showing signs of life. One has Alsysum and the other (see photo) has Wildflower seeds. They survived the worst ice storm we have had in twenty years. I've got a feeling things are going to get busy around here.

Re: Fourth Year SFG in Canada
Last Fall I harvested some small onions from the SFG and stored them in the basement. Over the winter some of them developed green shoots so I planted them in a pot. They have been sitting inside near a window. The weather is beautiful today ... sunny and much warmer than it has been. So I am giving the onions some time on the front porch. They looked topped because some people have been nibbling on the leaves.

Re: Fourth Year SFG in Canada
Beautiful sunny day in Canada's capital. Last Sunday I was bundled up in winter clothing due to an ice storm. This Sunday I was in the garden wearing shorts and a short sleeve shirt. I checked the Winter Sowing containers. So far there are sprouts in 8 of the 42 containers. Today, in addition to previous finds, I discovered newly sprouted kale, kohlrabi and pak choi. In addition, some of my garlic has broken through the surface of the MM.

Re: Fourth Year SFG in Canada
I took off most of the straw covering the garlic squares in one of my SFG 4x4 beds. There was still some ice in the straw but the garlic is up. I have another 2x2 bed of garlic that I have not yet uncovered.
Sadly, all of the goldfish are lying dead at the bottom of the garden pond. They will be scooped out and used as fertilizer in one of Mrs TDs flower beds.

I'm so sorry, TD. We had a goldfish pond in Vegas and loved watching the little guys. Will you get more to replace them?trolleydriver wrote:Sadly, all of the goldfish are lying dead at the bottom of the garden pond. They will be scooped out and used as fertilizer in one of Mrs TDs flower beds.
Re: Fourth Year SFG in Canada
We will replace them. We usually buy small "feeder" goldfish for about 20 cents each. It's hit and miss whether or not they will survive the winter here. They did survive the previous winter but a lot of water got drained out of the pond in December due to a hose leaking behind the waterfall.countrynaturals wrote:I'm so sorry, TD. Now that the hose has been repaired, maybe they will be able to survive this winter.
Re: Fourth Year SFG in Canada
This flower is opening up on one of my indoor growing Canada Crookneck Squash. The tips of the plants have exceeded a height of two feet above the potting mix.

Re: Fourth Year SFG in Canada
Today I took off most of the winter protective straw from this 2x2 garlic bed. All are up and looking good. They will green up now that the straw has gone.

How sweet! Seems like we're all a little more flower-oriented this year.trolleydriver wrote:There was nothing in this spot yesterday. Today we have the joy of a new born cocus flower.
Re: Fourth Year SFG in Canada
Interesting that you should easy that CN. I've got 42 Winter Sowing containers outside and the majority are sown with flower seeds. I've also been thinking that in the future I may dedicate some of my SFG beds to growing flowers.

Re: Fourth Year SFG in Canada
Crocus. How darling! I'm adding a flower to each bed this year. Have we started a new trend?
Re: Fourth Year SFG in Canada
So far 22 of my 42 Winter Sowing containers have seeds that have sprouted. Here is a container of Spinach.

Re: Fourth Year SFG in Canada
Some activities:
- prepared and reseeded an area on the front lawn dug up last year by the gas company (and now a squirrel has already dug holes in it)
- reseeded an area of the back lawn where I mulched leaves for composting
- added blood meal to the new lasagna no-dig bed
- emptied the shed of summer things like bicycles and patio furniture
- cleaned up the pond
- set up the portable greenhouse
- swept out the garage
