I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Re: SFG Foundation -- Facebook Page
We posted a photo of our SFG on the Foundation's Facebook community page. It's posted under Mrs TD's name and I am noted as the DH. The Foundation replied "I love the little table and chair". They could have commented on the garden!

TD, your garden looks great!! The seating area, too Your garden is what I hope my little garden grows up to be someday! A question: How did you affix the chicken wire to the bed it is over?

Colleen ... Thank you for your kind comments.ColleenW wrote:TD, your garden looks great!! The seating area, too Your garden is what I hope my little garden grows up to be someday! A question: How did you affix the chicken wire to the bed it is over?
Years ago the seating area was the location of an old metal garden shed and our soil veggie garden was next to it where the SFG is now located. The old veggie garden was much smaller than the area now given over to SFG beds. When I built a new shed we removed the old one and put down gravel and concrete patio slabs to cover what I consider to be contaminated ground. This spring/summer we added the little temporary greenhouse as well as the table and chairs. There is also a tumbler compost bin behind the table and next to the greenhouse. I find it convenient to have the table and chair in that location as a place where I can work (e.g., for writing down notes, for preparing seeds to be sown, for holding the harvests before taking the produce into the house, for just sitting and relaxing).
I made the chicken wire cages just as Mel describes in the ANSFG book. The base is made of 2x2 lumber screwed together at the corners. The chicken wire is fastened to the wood 2x2 base with plastic tie wraps. The chicken wire itself (e.g. where the pieces meet) also is held together with tie wraps. The cages just sit on top of the 2x8 lumber sides of the SFG beds. They are not held in place and can be easily removed to get to the veggie. I leave the cages in place over the winter, which can be brutal here. Even though they are of light construction, these cages have held up very well. Some of my beds just have plastic hardware cloth around them without anything on top and others have no protection at all.
Here is what the old shed and area looked like in 2006 with the weedy veggie garden to the left. Note that even back then I was using the SoilSaver composter.
Here is what the veggie garden area looked like a few years later and pre-SFG. We had a sand box and toy box on the patio for the grandkids.
And this summer it looks like this.
