Yes, garlic. I wish it was corn but the critters ate my 3 Sisters seeds so now I have 1 corn in a different bed.

Re: New England July 2017
Thanks.
After pulling the garlic this weekend, I guess I'll plant some more lettuce and beets since it's been such a cool summer this year. Hi is 68F tomorrow, if we're lucky.
This mornings harvest consisted of smoothie leaves, lunch, snacks and lettuce box fillings:
One of my chards is trying to bolt already and I haven't even eaten any yet, they are still so small. NEED MORE SUN!

Re: New England July 2017
This is the first time I've grown sugar snap peas. I'm growing them in a pot, and they got a late start, due to the fact that we had frost warnings so late this year, and I wasn't sure they could survive, so I kept babying them, covered up on the porch. So I wasn't so very surprised when I only got a couple of peas. I chalked it up to experience, having read that they're a cool weather crop, and once it gets hot, they will stop producing. Well...........it's hot, and my peas have had a sudden growth spurt, and are flowering like crazy! Any ideas what's happening?

Hey......I was just out checking the SFG, and guess what? I have cucumbers!!! They're only about an inch long, but they're there. Wheeeee! And lots of green tomatoes, and a couple of peppers.

CC, you're not so very far from me, are your any further along? Speaking of tomatoes, I ran across this website. https://www.tomatofest.com/index.html I haven't even been able to enjoy one little tomato from my garden yet, and I'm already dreaming of next year's tomatoes!
P.S. I forgot to mention, after looking through many of their seeds, this is one that I'd definitely like to try next year. Supposed to be the world's best tasting tomato. https://www.tomatofest.com/mariannas-peace-heirloom-tomato.html And there are so many others that are so beautiful, that I'd grow them for their looks alone. Can you tell I'm a tomato lover?

I'm not currently growing them, but I'd like to next year. I just discovered them on this website. There are pages and pages of beautiful, heirloom tomato seeds with descriptions. I kept thinking, "Oooo, I want that, and that, and that!" Here are the seeds they sell. https://store.tomatofest.com/Heirloom_Tomato_Seeds_s/1.html

Oh, not really. I get to eat the occasional bush bean here and there. There's one green Super Sonic tom and a few green cherry toms forming, a deformed cuke about 2 inches long that I think won't be growing any larger, and 0 peppers on 6 plants. I just pulled and ate the first full size carrot this morning, but I planted those back around carrot week. Other than that, still gnoshing on the cool veggies - greens, some lettuces, peas, chives.
We've been so cool and foggy that my zinnias are getting moldy.
No PM on the squash plants yet tho.

Re: New England July 2017
Sigh. Geez, I can't say it's been cool here, but it is cooler than normal. We've been averaging in the mid to upper 80s instead of in the 90s, so I guess that's cooler. But I'm disappointed that I've only seen two peppers on three pepper plants, although I have to admit, my 4x4 SFG is pretty jungly, so I might be missing something. I posted a pic of my 1 inch cuke. And while there are lots of flowers, I don't see any zucchini yet. God bless the tomatoes! Even though they're green, there are lots of them. They're what I'm really looking forward to, so now it's a waiting game. Which I'm no good at!!! Oh, before I forget, my sandals arrived from Costco today, and I love them...so comfy. My toes appreciate the breeze, thanks for the recommendation.CapeCoddess wrote:hammock gal wrote:

Re: New England July 2017
OK, I feel better. I broke down and went to the farm stand. (One of the main reasons I started the SFG, is that I spend so much money at the farm stand every summer on tomatoes!) I was whining to the girl at the register, that I have 11 tomato plants and not one of them is ripe yet. She told me that I'm not alone, everyone who's coming in is complaining of the same thing. She said, "Actually, those tomatoes that you're putting in your bag are from the hothouse. Our field tomatoes won't be ready for a week or a week and a half yet. " So I'm just going to relax now, my tomatoes are just fine.

ohhhhh...that IS good news.....I guess.
There's a variety called 'Fourth of July' that I haven't tried. I wonder if it would live up to it's name here...?

Man it's hot here today! But we're out of the fog.
Snacked on my first cuke this morning:
My Bulgarian 'Gergana' is a little short of the 12+ inches I read about.

Re: New England July 2017
Loooooook!!!!!! I almost picked it and ate it, but I thought I'd be really patient and wait one more day. I guess my whining must have done some good.
CC, I'm glad you got to enjoy a cuke, mine is still only an inch long. My peppers are bigger than yours, but so far, I only see two of them on three plants. From what I read about Thunderbolts, they should be loaded. Ah well, I toast your cuke with my almost ripe cherry tomato!

Not sure, a guy at the flea market was selling them as "cherry tomatoes." They looked nice and healthy, so I grabbed them. The other two that are in a pot, not MM, are much smaller.

Re: New England July 2017
I saw a pink blush on one of my maters. Hooray, maybe there'll be a few in a couple weeks. For today, I went to Frugal Farm (where I have a prepaid $50 credit for produce this year) and bought some fresh maters, also from the greenhouse. No field maters ready yet. Also got cukes, yellow squash and zucchini along with one large garlic. I had to stock up a bit.

Keeping my fingers crossed for your tomatoes! That first blush is a beautiful sight, isn't it? Here in the northeast, our season is so short, it really makes that first tomato an event!
I'm thankful for the farm stands, it's so nice to be able to get really fresh local produce. But here's what I don't like. It seems like every time I find a great farm stand, maybe just a table under a tree, by the side of the road, with a cigar box, and it's on the honor system, or a little shack with the most beautiful baskets of fruits and veggies...I hurry to tell my friends about it, and the next thing I know, the table and the shack are gone, and they're building a nice, new, air conditioned space to sell from, and all their prices have doubled and tripled. I'm going to keep my big mouth shut, and stop advertising for them!!!
