crop rotation - 8 months of cover crop Empty 8 months of cover crop

Post  jimmy cee 5/2/2017, 9:50 pm

Just barging in here to show what 8 months of a cover crop looks like Rye grain was planted last October.
I am still in the process of getting rid of lots of stuff.  All my seed making equipment is gone, some one got a great deal and I am satisfied that it went to some one who will use it lovingly and wisely.
House finally went up for sale this week...as soon as sold I will be gone. Hopefully to start all over providing I still have the gumption, if nothing else, I will have some great compost piles going. I love making the compost much more than gardening itself...Strange but true...

Wow, look at all that green.  It will make a great addition to the compost pile or chop it up and turn it under and let it compost on its own.

Jimmy I Know change is hard, When You get to Your new location think of it as a artist with a blank canvas. A little each day it's a reason to get out of bed.

You're right, I know I'll start with some containers, I have composting in my blood and it will need somewhere to go to work.
One great item is my sons next door neighbor is a farmer from India. He has one gorgeous veggie garden, will be interesting converting him over to SFG...

Jimmy ... I'm so glad you posted on the forum. Just a couple of days ago I got to thinking that we have not heard from you and I was wondering how you are doing. Like you I like "playing with" compost. Wishing you all the best as you move forward.

Thanks for posting, Jimmy!
I have a hard time imagining how it feels leaving that much behind, but I do get those gumptionless days.
Knowing the garden you're leaving behind didn't sprout up overnight has two sides: Yes there is the size of the loss, but also the understanding that you're not expected to have a big garden appear overnight this time around, either! Start small at the new place (square by square!) and give your compost a purpose; containers are great way to restart. Does your son's family use herbs? I love recommending perennial herb beds, mine have been less work then most of the vegetables (easy to buy transplants, fewer pests/diseases, less finicky about watering, no need to harvest at a particular time.)
Let all those lovely compost microbes have some plant root companions.

Well, Jimmy, the people have spoken. You will be having a garden (and compost) on the new blank canvas. Square by square, pot by pot. Very Happy

OK the people have spoken...I must comply..My tumbler is already in place and being filled. I found a three piece compost bin that I like and will most likely copy it. Hope to have it ready by summers end so by next spring I'll have 3 bins of compost, vermiculite ? ...just a matter of searching for it, to many folk just want to go to the big box stores and buy stuff.

I will be looking into these pre made beds..I really like them.

This will be the corner where three sections of compost bins will be built.
