Melons 2016
My first ever year growing melons! This here is a Minnesota Midget, in a container on my South Annex, LOL. I have Blacktail Mountain watermelons, also in the annex, and Sakatas Sweets (musk) in the tomatoe and pepper 4x4.
I have never tasted a homegrown melon in my life. Hope this is my first of many!

I'm doing better raising butterflies than I am raising veggies, so I'll leave my new avatar alone.

I like Suz's spin. I 'grew' fireflies this year, and since they are still out and about (and, yet, on the blink!), and they are beetles...:

My avatar fits in with any weather, so I too will leave alone...
Besides, it goes with my cracked sense of humor, lol!

The Avatar is really too small to see this picture but it is a picture of my Lady Cowpeas almost ready to harvest. Cowpeas in abundance in my late summer garden here just below Hotlanta.

I hope rain, cooler temps, and lower humidity...deciding on what plants to rip out to make way for fall crops. Need to learn a bit more about season extension in case I get a late start on a few things.

Thanks SR, for remembering to start this thread!
Cape Cod in the summer time means LOBSTAH PARTIES! So I get all my co-workers and neighbors party scraps - lobster shells and bodies, clam shells, veggie leftovers, etc - for my compost pile all month long.
I love my neighbors!

Cowpeas? Need to educate myself! Cool plants, yolos!
Forgot to post an actual picture of the avatar....
How long does that stuff take to assimilate, CC?
Landarch, I get it. So hot and dry.... Will need to do any germinating inside. I can barely keep the actual garden alive, let alone think about seeds.....

Re: August Avatar: What is going on where you are?
Okay, so I lied! When I visited the compost area this morning, there was a perfect volunteer sunflower. I know I've used a sunflower in the past as an avatar, so this time I just used the center. This one is so perfect, it deserves its 15 minutes of fame.
Re: August Avatar: What is going on where you are?
The lobster shells and bodies can decompose in 10 - 30 days, depending on how active the pile is. My newest pile, started last month, makes short work of them. Last years pile still contained a couple of really thick claws here and there which I'm still picking out of the fall/spring composted beds, along with clam shells of which I'm beginning to wonder if they ever breakdown.Scorpio Rising wrote:

That sunflower IS perfect, Country! I like how you used the center as your avatar.

Re: August Avatar: What is going on where you are?
Thanks, CC. I'm sure the chickens will appreciate that center in a couple of weeks, too.

Love it! Great idea CN!
Interesting, CC, I would have thought much longer!
