Hi, i pretty new to SFG and the forum. i've been a meber for a little bit, kinda just lurking, decided it was time to start posting. I'm originally from oh so getting used to a different growing season has been a major challenge, keep trying to plant things to soon!!! i started learning about SFG last year and had a hard time finding everything i needed. moved over the winter and now live in a great place with a nice sunny yard. have built a 4x4, a 2x5 (an old bookshelf that broke), and a 3x3. panning on expanding each year. there doesnt seem to be and SFG teachers around here so thinking i may ask for the corespondence course for christmas so i can spread the wealth (of knowledge).

Hi and welcome to the Forum. I just completed the correspondence course myself (as in, I got certified 2 days ago) so I suggest you do it! It was fun and you'll learn a great deal in the process.
Best of luck with your SFG (and your studies to become a teacher).
Very Happy

newbie in northern mn Empty Welcome to you.

Hi, nursekat424,

I'm a native Ohioan transplanted to MN also. (I hope I got that right that you are from OH.) And I have a daughter even farther north than you in MN. She just moved to Bemidji. I spent lots of time in the garden as a girl, but haven't had the opportunity to garden as I would like until now, so I'm pretty rusty.

Glad to see so many Minnesotans on here.

we just moved here (DL) from Bagley, last november. and yes i'm transplanted from Ohio, almost 3 years here. i love it here, and the cold doesnt bother me, just the short growing season. we are heading back to OH for a visit in june. thanks everyone for the welcome. and glad to see there are several minnisotans here.

also- i will try and take a few pics tomorrow (need to for the garlic post i replied to earlier), but we are just setting most of it up, still have the 4x4 to finish. and tried planting my corn to early- even covered it died newbie in northern mn Icon_sad . going to try 3 sisters there intead.

got a batch of mels mix half mixed in my garden shed on a tarp to finish (didnt have enough compost), hopefully it wont rain again today and i cn finish it this afternoon.

newbie in northern mn 396615 Nursecat424.

I am originally from Florida and my wife is from Fergus Falls, MN just below Fargo, ND and we now live in Wake, VA.

Our tomatoes, beans, peppers and other veggies are doing great. Also we planted a lot of strawberries this year to go with the few we had in 2 buckets last year. This years strawberries are bearing well even though it is early in the season. We planted 4 or 5 varieties of ever-bearing so we should get a continual harvest until frost.

I went to Google and typed in "frost dates by zip code" and entered our zip and it was very accurate for this year. 198 frost free days with last frost about March 25th and first expected frost around Oct. 26. How does that compare with your dates?

God Bless, Ward.

newbie in northern mn Empty frost

Post  nursekat424 5/12/2010, 1:26 pm

we are still having frost, we had rain/snow mix last week. i've been covering everything with sheer curtains (idea i found on some web site) and its been ok. the corn didnt survive because i tried covering with plastic and had it too close to the plants (learning experience) and they frosted (froze) because of the moisture on the plastic being to close to the plants. not guarenteed no frost till after june 1st.

27F here this morning. We had snow last week as well. I put out the tender plants after Memorial day, but I still watch the weather as we just may get a frost...

OMG - I think I have one of those closet thingies in my attic! I'll have to check whether I could use it like yours (But I think mine has solid white plastic, not the clear plastic) But this is a great idea!

Your garden is looking really nice!
