Okay, so I'm totally pumped up to SFG. Got my 2 tier step up boxes put together, and now I just can't decide where to put up my 4" tomato tower - towards the north or the south. I know technically I need to put it on the north side, but I keep thinking that maybe south side will do, and here's why.

The spot my SFG is in gets sun from 8am to about 6pm. So I was thinking that it may be okay if, by the time the sun rolls around behind the tomato tower (around 2pm), some of the other plants got some shade during the hottest part of the day. I'm in 7b, btw. But now I'm thinking that the other bigger plants like peppers may be kind of shading themselves throughout the day just because of their size, and won't thrive without lots of sun. And they may shade the smaller plants closer to the house too much. Does that make sense? Or will it be okay because the sun almost circles the garden? I just don't know.

Aesthetically, it would look better on the south, that's why I'm contemplating it, but I'm doing this for aesthetics I suppose. If I did it this way the tomato tower would back up to my neighbor's property, instead of backing up to our house. I'm just afraid it would look weird if we backed it up to our side of the house on the lower tier (we can't move it closer to the house because of a walkway). I've already filled the boxes so moving them around really isn't an option. I just want some expert opinions. If you made it this far, thank you. I can really babble sometimes. Smile

I have a diagram that I did in Word, but have no idea how to post that...

Hi,
We can only upload files in picture format ie jpg, png, gif etc. Does Word have an option to make the conversion? If so, there are instructions in the 'how-to' forum.

Since it isn't a trellis that shades a whole side of the box, I'd go with whatever pleases you. One tomato plants isn't really going to give that much shade for the entire day. (This is coming from one who puts things where she wants regardless of "convention".)

I agree! I would go with what pleases you. It sounds like you get lots of light. Maybe plant some plants that like more shade around the taller ones? We are trying that with our tomato plants and peppers. Let us know how it works out for you!
