Post  YorkR88 4/29/2016, 2:59 pm

I have a question about marigold spacing.

I bought a mix of marigolds yesterday and they came 3 to a container and they are pretty close together with a good root system. Question is should I plant the whole thing in the center of a square and call it good? (FYI I already did this...) or should you separate them and plant them one each - 4 to a square? Or should I get 3-4 containers and plant all of them whole?

I just want to plant them where they grow in nice and thick.

Thanks!

Last year I planted 4 per square which I think was too many. It also depends on what variety of marigold and the size to which they will grow.

Here is what mine looked like (the yellow flowers on the left and right front corners). The plants in the middle front corners are dusty miller. Again I planted 4 per square and by the end o summer they were huge.

As long as you pinch them back, one/sq could fill out nicely.

Mine go nuts, there is no way they would do 1/SF. I do not put mine in my SFG, however. I think they would love love love the MM! But it really does depend on which variety you have going on there!

I would break up your bunch of 3 and space them evenly into the one square and just see what happens! Trial and error, the best way (or not) to learn, but keep notes!

Marigolds are great growers, and will take over whatever they can in my experience! I love them!

I actually started seeds of Cottage Red marigolds inside this year. They are a very vigorous and beautiful plant, can't wait to see the FLOWERS! flower

Since I've already got them planted I will just leave them and see what happens. However in the two squares directly behind the marigolds I am going to plant some Nasturtiums and will break those up and space evenly.

Does anyone know the name of the specific variety of marigold for natural pest control? I know this was previously discussed but it was probably buried in another thread. I know it is not the common yellow or orange marigold normally sold by nurseries. Thanks

WOW! I was all upset when I sat down because the chickens are raiding my BTE and I'm exhausted from fighting a losing battle. I opened this post and scanned down through the beautiful pics and now I'm all mellowed out again. Thank you all for the flower therapy. Marigold Purchase 3170584802

Sanderson - another SFG member (Pollinator) said that the Dwarf French Marigold was the one we should be growing.  He sent me a few seeds and I have been growing it most years.  Not this year.  I probably have some saved seeds sitting around if you need any.  If you visit his website, I think he talks about them in relation to stopping squash bugs from getting to his squash.
