New to SFG and new to New Mexico

Hello!

I am new to SFG this year. I have done a little gardening here and there, but this year my husband and I plan to execute the SFG plan to the fullest! The only slight worry I have is that we are moving to Albuquerque, NM in a couple of weeks because of military orders. I have always lived in the Pacific Northwest....so the NM climate is completely new to me. Any tips on what veggies will be successful in the climate? Thanks!

Welcome, Anne42!  That will be quite a change for you climate wise!  You will love SFGing, it is addictive.  Post often, we love to hear about your journey!  No advice from me on what to grow down in NM, but there are a lot of gardeners here who will help!

I am not sure which Region you will be in but I am quite sure it is not Canada.

Anne,  Welcome to the Forum from California!    You are in the Southwest Desert Region, which currently doesn't have an active Host.  However, Audrey, Yardslave and I are in the Northern California Region and our weather, especially in the summers, are similar to what you will experience in NM.  The one thing, actually there are 2, that will really help is some sun shading.  The other is mulching thickly.

You may want to read the 2 topics of "Northern California & Coastal Valleys - What are you doing this month?"  The first one is 67 pages and now locked, and the second one is just revving up.  We have lots of photos and share our wows and successes.  You will be able to grow tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, potatoes, strawberries, sweet potatoes, beans, summer peas, melons, cucumbers, and herbs. Lettuce in the fall/winter/spring.  In the winter, with maybe some plastic covered green house frames or agribon row covers for freezing nights, you can grow the lettuces, the cabbage family, you know, broccoli, kale, etc., Swiss chard, onions and garlic for over-wintering, parsnips.  Strawberries, grapes, citrus trees.  Just about anything you want except bananas.  

TinySpock (AZ) and Brainchasm Las Vegas, NV) had some good topics, also.  TS had wood table top beds and BC had cinder block on-ground beds.  There is someone else in your region that has a large gazebo in the middle of the yard and has lots of SFG beds under and around it. I just can't remember his name at this moment.

Oh, and I forgot.  You will have to water daily in the desert.  Just follow the ANSFG book.  EMC for trellis supports, etc.  We are here to help.  And we love photos!
