Hello from Mexico

For many years I've been composting, but when I saw this technique, I decided to try it. My garden is in the front yard on a stone entrance, the only place with enough hours of sunlight, and I planted in early March. For weeks I've been having salads from the garden, and the tomato plant (which I've never been able to grow before) threatens to take over the house. It was very hard to gather the materials because vermiculite is not available in Mexico and I had to haul it home from Austin. The mixing was pretty harrowing, too! I made enough for two frames (also ordered from Mel and hauled here from the border), and now I'm in business! Wish I had someone around here to share information with, but such is not the case.

Welcome! Which part of Mexico? I'm kind of assuming you're in one of the northern border states since you said you hauled the Vermiculite back from Austin.

Yes, I'm in northeastern Mexico, in the Monterrey greater urban area. Our weather means we can begin planting sometimes even in February. Y sí, hay mucha oportunidad para aprender mucho!

There is a humus supplier in my area, and I have four bags of humus hanging around. The source of the humus is horse manure, and the producer has raised his own batch of earthworms brought from the state of Michoacán. He also has a liquid which is a compost enhancer, supposedly increasing the rate of composting, and he promised to let me have some as a pilot project for my own composter. I hope it works because I used almost all my compost making Mel's mix, and at this rate I will be having three or maybe four crops before cold weather sets in..so I am desperate for more compost. My friends think I'm slightly batty, of course--otherwise why would I be so obsessed with rotting vegetable matter!

So far I have planted dill, thyme, marjoram, lettuce, spinach, peas, green peppers, a couple of flowering plants, green onions, and the threatening tomato plant. Does anyone have experience with corn? I was given some great red corn and wonder if it too can be planted in such a small amount of soil, and if anyone has experience with corn pollenation.
