Yes I have!  I think Joel Salatin is an awesome guy.  My husband and I buy a 1/4 cow from a local farmer that's trying to farm in similar methods, which is something we feel really good about.  I'd buy chickens from them too, but criminy, farm raised chickens are expensive ($30 a bird).  I'll stick with beef for now.

Plantoid, I'm not surprised that kids don't know where meat comes from.  I wonder how many of them have actually seen a real cow or chicken?

I agree, LS, it is a very touchy subject for some. In my neck of the woods, it is a way of life. And to do it right? Excellent. For everyone.

I can relate to those kids.  Up until I was a Junior in College and was allowed to move to an apartment off campus with some girl friends.  I learned that mashed potatoes were made from a vegetable called potatoes.  I thought mashed potatoes only came from flakes in a box.  Never had any potatoes cooked at home other than instant mashed potatoes.  Actually, I only went to the grocery store one time with my mom when I was growing up.  I remember her buying 1/2 gallon containers of milk that she would take home and put in the freezer.  Then when she needed milk, she would defrost the milk and mix it half and half with instant milk to cut down the costs.

Look at me now.  A garden growing all kinds of veggies I have never eaten before.  Also we purchase our beef (1/4 or 1/2 a cow) from a local farmer.  No chickens or rabbits yet.  Maybe some day if I can sneak them thru the homeowners association vigilantes.

I think I have recovered enough to finally talk about yesterday's delicious chicken/turnkey bone broth.  I carefully screened, then ladled into the large tea jar I bought expressly for decanting the broth before refrigerating.  Well, as I was carefully ladling the broth into the top opening, it was nicely running out of the lower spigot into the sink and down the drain.  Shocked  I actually said some bad words, I was so mad at myself.  The precious surviving 2 cups were used to boil some noodles and that remainder was made into gravy for the chicken and noodles.

No more bone broth making until the bedrooms are painted and re-carpeted, and my canning jars and pot are accessible again. No room left in the freezer.

I feel for you, sanderson. I knocked over one of my jars recently and lost most of it.

It hurts. Sad

Oh Sanderson Sad  I'm sorry you lost your broth!  But at least you saved some of it!

I've been using my beef broth in lots of things since I made it.  I made shrimp scampi last night and used the broth instead of wine.  It was excellent!

There are lots of hidden emoticons on the right. Sort of like knowing where to click in Mario Brothers.
