Hi everyone! I'm in eastern Massachusetts, home of the bean, cod, and Boston Red Sox, and I'm a former long haul trucker now working in animal training. I have two acres here, but with two bad hips and an aversion to mosquitoes, I want to move away from a big garden plot with too low beds and too many weeds. Hence my interest in SFG.

I've done some container gardening in the past, but not with much intention, if you know what I mean. I'll be starting off small, probably with just a 4x4 for my SFG. I'm even thinking about taking the course to be a SFG presenter and share what I learn. If any of you are doing that, I'd love to hear about your experiences and how you like it.

Those of you in FL may get some questions from me, too, as I waver back and forth about leaving the snow belt Very Happy at some point for a place where I could actually grow my own food with a longer season.

Hi, dogdiva!  happy hi  Welcome to the Forum from California. glad you\'re here

SFG is great for people with health issues who want to garden.  Raised table top beds (2' or +) allow one to stand or sit on a bar stool and garden.  Please use our Search for photos and ideas on table tops.  With 2 acres you have room for compost piles or bins.  Have you read the book?  All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew?  That's the best place to start.  As far as taking the class, I personally recommend waiting until you have at least a season under your belt.  You will learn so, so much that first season.  And, the folks on the Forum are here to help you on your journey.

PS  When you have a moment, could you modify the "location" in your profile to also reflect east Massachusetts.  That will help folks know your growing conditions.  Thanks

Welcome to the forum from Ohio! SFG is much easier on the body that traditional gardening, after the set-up and the Mel's Mix. I agree with sanderson, read the All New Square Foot Gardening and that will help you get a framework. Also, the archives here on this site are full of great success stories, photos, and more importantly, questions and answers!

We love photos, too, so post some when you get started on your SFG journey. You will love it! glad you\'re here

Hi Dogdiva!  Welcome from Atlanta, GA!  We're glad you've joined us!!

I have to agree w/ Sanderson on getting a season under your belt.  It will help you in the long run.

On your 'skeeters, you might try an olive oil base with essential oils mixed in.  Rosemary, peppermint, orange.  They hate them all!

Know we're here to help, answer questions, gab, commiserate when necessary, and just have fun with each other.
