Sorry I have been scarce - COMPUTER ISSUES!!!  Packing up the laptop to send in for repairs & hopefully when it returns there will be lots of replies here with what all of you have planned for October.  I have cleaned out my back 4 boxes, attached them all together, and am getting ready to fill the new connections with a new batch of MM to plant my garlic.  My weedy herb bed has now become a very nice brick patio - pics to come when 'puter is back!  'Maters are still going crazy, picked my 6-carrot harvest, and am hoping my peppers will survive outside until I am back from my hiking trip because I don't have time to get them potted and into the house before I leave.

What are all of you doing this month?

Computer issues are a bummer!  Cleaned out the trellises from the pole beans, looks like the patty pans are over too, will get them out this weekend.  Planted radishes and mesclun lettuces.

I think I will try a square of garlic.

Do try garlic. You have nothing to lose but 9 cloves at the worst.

OK, I will! We eat a lot of garlic. And organic would be an improvement for sure!

Harvested the butternut squash that are ready (some still have a while to go)  20 lbs

Rest of tomatoes (all green yet)  10 lbs

Will attempt to get the larger green tomatoes ripe and the small ones might become fried green ones.

Still have the brussel sprouts out there.  Hopefully it will not be too long before the frost makes them better.

Yep, GG, that is what I am doing either tomorrow after work or Saturday; pull everything, pick the greenies, harvest the cherries, basil, and pull squash. Might try covering the Swiss chard, and I may have a few radishes out there, not sure what is left honestly....

Compost everything except the squash which has PM all over it. Turn the pile. Top the SFG off with compost that is done-ish. And maybe a layer of manures. And then plan.....and watch all our 3 to 4 season friends! N&C Midwest October 2015 3170584802

I am glad that I don't have to do more than one season.  Too many other things in life.

Yeah, I get kinda burned out towards fall. But maybe it is built in, because we know it is over? Not sure, but my garden energy is better in spring/early summer!

Well, just took my last 2 patty pans, green and reddish Brandywines, Sunsugars off, and cut basil (bolting) and brought it all in. Gonna frost for sure tonight. Bye summer plants...(bittersweet moment)

Covered with various blankies my big planter with mum, geranium, yam vine and lantana; blue Morning Glory on pyramid/obelisk; and did cover my Swiss Chard in the SFG. We will see! Chard still going strong.

Will spend some quality time with my compost pile tomorrow. and put the majority of the SFG to bed under some manure. And maybe some compost when I turn the pile!

Fall!

All that is left out there, assuming it survived, since the cover blew off, if some Swiss chard.

Warmed up enough to harvest some more.  Had a hard frost last night so now I dug up the parsnips (6 pounds) and brought in the rest of the squash which did not get totally done (using like summer squash) (6.5 pounds)

I think next year I am going to put the parsnips in one of the table tops which are deeper.  They won't be hurt by frost either.

Tomorrow I will  begin the brussel sprouts unless it rains.  I have grandkids that love them so will share.

Yeah, we are going to get a freeze tonight, mid-upper 20s, so I brought my geranium in, covered the others, and the chard is on it's own. I am tired of it, and honestly planted too much due to Swiss chard withdrawal that I had suffered as a result of my "regular" garden.

Anyways, wish I had some kale or spinach but waited too long. Got all the other stuff off. It was cold here all day. Will compost/pull/assess tomorrow!

I am going to buy a bulb planter today!  I have some Ice Follies daffodils to plant, and one re-blooming iris corm that needs to get in the ground.  We got a little rain late yesterday, so hopefully easier to work in the ground.  And garlic!  Plus, I am going to use my bulb planter to set my peat pots in Spring!  Great idea, can't remember who said that, it was on the sunflower thread.....(Mikesgarden!!! thanks!)

And I plan to put some manure on the SFG beds to pat down and preserve the MM from getting blown all over the neighborhood this winter!

Looking for bargain sunflower seeds and some containers on clearance.  I want to do some containers, they seem so fun!

Just went out and topped the beds off with composted manure. All that is left is the Swiss chard, just letting it ride. See that depression in the middle? I need to fill that next spring and cover the area i the middle with cardboard so the grass and weeds don't take over like they did a bit this summer. And there is my good old compost pile with all the garden debris waiting to turn into black gold...
