First pickings
Went up to the apple orchard/pumpkin farm this morning to ask my friend when the best time to pick squash and pumpkins. He said when the leaves get paper thin and the vine starts to die then pick. He said if you pick before the seeds are fully ripe the squash will release nutrients for the seeds to mature so don't pick early. So I came home and this is what I got for the first of the squash ( second for the Hopi). The second photo is a new one called red October, said to be excellent.

Re: First pickings
John, you inspired me to plant winter squash! I too have patty pans, but I love delicious winter varieties. Beautiful harvest!

Re: First pickings
Thanks all. We never plant the summer squash varieties' because one we don't like them very much and two people always have too much and give them away. I usually have acorn also but for some reason I forgot to plant any. I will have another photo when we pick our Egyptian pumpkin ( maybe squash) when the vine starts to turn. It looks like a three ft. long butternut. The lady that gave me the seeds says that it is very good and some reach 40 lbs. in weight. Mine looks to be about 10 lbs. or so.
