Who Done It Empty Who Done It

Post  johnp 9/5/2015, 10:05 am

Last night is first Friday artwalk in a neighboring town and we were going to meet some friends. I secured my small container of wine and went out to the car. As I was walking around the car I glanced over to my onions that are on a screen held up by saw horses. I have pictures to help explain:

My garage/ RV drivethru. We don't have the RV anymore so it is used for storage. That is why the onions are drying in that area. Garage always closed at night, mostly open during the day:
Who Done It Dscn1112

Screen where over 40 onions + or - were Thursday afternoon:
Who Done It Dscn1113

Dropped stem going toward the garage door:
Who Done It Dscn1114
No onions left, no tracks that I can see, screen has no holes in it, screen not moved.Nothing else disturbed. I am at a loss. My wife noticed it Friday morning but thought I had picked them up to store. Again, who done it?

I don't think so. We live at the end of a dead end street in a rural area. No one comes down this way. You couldn't  see the onions from the open garage door and there is a lot of other stuff they could steal besides onions.

John, I'm afraid I would have to go with human, also. Nothing else could have left the site so clean or intact. No bear drool, hairs, stink, bits of onion flesh, no scat. Racoons and opossums would have tipped over the screen at some point or torn it. Maybe left some scat during the many trips. Doing a search didn't reveal any other animal that likes onions like we do. Sad

Do you have a trail camera, John?  I'm betting on human, also.  I'd put out some more "bait"--maybe a bit of those extra tomatoes you've got and see what "bites".  Is anything else missing or moved?

l used to live in a secluded area, in the woods, at the end of a dirt road. Our place was burgled at least once every year. Which totally sucked.

Burglary of even the remotest cabins in the woods in Alaska is very common. It's just what people do, anywhere there are people. I'm voting human, too.

Either that, or dolphin.

That's the thing, my garage is full of tools, paintings, camping equipment etc. Why would anyone steal onions? These are just an onion set that you buy at the garden center, they are not even very good. Just the regular cut and cry onions. Heck I even leave my truck keys in the ignition. I still think an animal (raccoon maybe) but I would think there would be holes in the screen and a few left. A bear would trash the place.

The concept of property rights has been abandoned by most.

Parents should inculcate--and schools reinforce--this principle.

I also wish that simple courses in logic and ethics were taught at about the sixth-grade level, and repeated during the late teens.

I am so property rights aware that I do not walk across someone's lawn but use the pathways.

It used to be, that in the old days, when humanity lived together in groups in large caves, each family would never look in the direction of any other family, treating each other as invisible.

Kelejan,

We old codgers seem to be the only ones who care about ethics and morality.

It's time to begin stirring things up a bit, I think.  Generally, change is most successful when begun at the grass-roots level.  Let's start planting those seeds!

Someone who wanted to make salsa. Or a dolphin, onion squirrel, kids, or someone who moved them as a prank. I can picture them under the hood where the heat would create a smelly disaster.

If it was wildlife I would expect the screen to have been tipped off the sawhorses.

It is strange that schools teach so many useless things, but don't teach you how to be a good boss or employee, spend little or no time on how to write a business memo or letter or report, or teach you how to do such simple but vital things as balance a checkbook or evaluate credit card offers. Instead of learning things we need to learn and can expect to use every day of our lives, we concentrate on teaching irrelevancies we'll immediately forget.

I'm all for a broad education, don't get me wrong. I don't believe education is merely about teaching us to be obedient cogs in a machine. But I don't see why we seem to avoid like the plague the teaching of anything practical.

Me too. I have my own projects, and my own priorities. Then there are my family's priorities, and the things I need to do for friends and others, and then the random stuff (baloney half the time) that somebody else is trying to rope me into spending my time and effort and gas money on. Then someone will come along and mumble something and a week later be surprised I didn't memorize it.

Hey, I've got my life and you've got yours. You're lucky if I remember your name, I sometimes want to say.

These days I like to tell people that if they want me to remember something, they should write it down. Otherwise, I might add as a sly aside, it's probably not that important. That puts the burden right back where it belongs -- for their own affairs, that is ... on them!

I'm okay with an organized list of things to accomplish. What drives me nuts is random mumbling and half-thought-out requests for help that never stop coming. You can wind up with a thousand trivial and confused tasks and constant things to criticize you for not doing if you let people think that's okay.

Marc, all those things you listed were things my parents taught me, g [d morals and life skills. Except the boss. When i was little, they said I was bossy, but we all know it's not the same thing.

Parents are the first teachers.

But back to the missing onions, I'm afraid we will neve know the answer to this one.
