Creating SFG on existing soil? Empty Creating SFG on existing soil?

I am wondering if I can create a SFG on existing soil if I lay down sand and a weed cloth and then put 6 inches of Mel's mix. The reason is that this location is the only part of my yard that has sun but it used to be a flower garden. Has anyone done this? I am new to SFG and would appreciate any advice.

Yep thats the beauty of the box - no digging, no tilling, no none of that hard work. You definately need the weedcloth to keep out the grass and weeds. You can also try a layer of newspaper or old cardboard under the weedcloth if you are really worried about it. You probably don't need to add sand, unless you are trying to achieve something i dont know about.

Thanks, just wanted to make sure. Glad I don't have to do a layer of sand! Didn't want to do that extra step if it was not necessary.

I put mine down over my existing row veggie garden. We do most, if not all of our Christmas and other big shopping online, so, we had accumulated QUITE a collection of cardboard boxes. I broke them all down, laid them over the entire garden surface, poked holes in it at intervals to let water drain, cuz it wasn't draining AT all, put down wood chips, put down the boxes, didn't have the mix for a LONG time. I would say I didn't get my mix going for another month, and only a VERY few really big, determined, yet deformed dandelions attempted to break through, but they were getting teensy bit of light through the drainage holes. I finished it up and have had no issues whatsoever. It's been very spring like with warm weather and a pretty decent amount of rain, and while everything else is going gangbusters in the weed department, the garden is good.
