Radish Sizes

Doing a little investigation on my own, but thought I might get some useful input here.
I planted radishes this year and the plants from the ground up looked really good, way better than last year, but the radishes themselves when I harvested them were very small.  There were a few good ones, but largely they were small.  Looked kind of funny with this nice, healthy sized plant with "itty-bitty" radish under it.
Am I missing a nutrient in my compost?  What helps promote growth/size of the actual radish?

You are not missing a nutrient, Zmoore,  you have an abundance of nitrogen which encourages leaves at the expense of root formation.

I have made the same mistake.

Too much of a good thing huh?  I'll have to have a talk with my radishes next year about over indulging 

So, pick some squares for radishes next year and skip adding more compost or add less?

Beats me.     I haven't been able to find an answer for the erratic bulbing that I get from radishes.  I've planted rads in adjacent squares, three days apart.  One square bulbed, and the other only got leaves.  Maybe it was the full moon, or maybe it was the color of socks that I was wearing that made the difference.  I don't know.

I once planted a square of rads in 11 different boxes on the same day, all amended with the same compost; some bulbed, some didn't. I've gotten to the point where if I don't have harvestable radishes in 30 days, I pull them and re-plant.  

They're considered a cool season plant, and unlike other cool crops like spinach and bok choy, I haven't had any luck by babying them in the heat with shade cloth and daily watering.

It just occurred to me that I don't remember planting them in 'depleted' squares. I think I'll try that once the weather starts cooling down.

Honestly, from my old ways, they really like cold. Go EARLY with radishes. Otherwise you get weird root development, or really bad harsh tasting things....

Have limited experience with SFG and radishes, got about 1/2 that had a globe shape, Burpee White Globe....half had an extended hard root,,,,inedible half were compost. Probably because too much nitrogen for these guys!
