Tomato Leaves: The Toxic Myth - Article Gave Me Food for Thought

I just finished reading the following thought provoking article about the toxicity of tomato leaves.  It was written by a lady who goes by the name of "Garden Betty."  She really gave me some "food for thought" (groan), and she backs up her observations with information from scientific studies.  You might like to read this.

Judging from the comments, it appears that some folks never got the 'vegetable nightshades are poisonous' memo, and are still alive and well after eating them!

The article is interesting. We consume a lot of fried 'green' tomatoes, but, I have my doubts about the tomato leaves, etc, made into a spray for other veggies.(Only my opinion) If it really worked, don't you think that tomatoes would be the best looking plants in the garden? Mine are not! Bugs, worms, fungal problems, blights, anything else WILL bother my tomato plants.

Am about to read this, but the first thought that comes to mind is that I was so surprised to find my extra tomatoes planted out back last year all got eaten by deer. I hadn't thought that was possible, tomato foliage supposedly being poisonous. Since then I've read about deer eating other people's tomato plants too. So I had to wonder -- are deer somehow immune, or are tomato plants not as toxic as they are said to be?

Throwing a wrench into the works -- an animal-infested garden I used to plant in never had any invaders eating my tomato plants there.

Then again, different types of bugs sure did ...

Okay just read it -- very nicely written article! But as many leaves as I prune from my tomatoes, I don't see much opportunity to use them as food, since I generally remove the diseased or old yellow used-up ones. The leaves are otherwise too valuable for what they do for the good of the plant for me to just pluck them like salad leaves.

Maybe they could be an extra bounty at the end of the season when pulling up the plants, though.

Now I've got a whole new reason to hope those tomatoes i just planted come up.
