When weeds grow in my squares I love it. Gives me reasons to open the gates and check on everything, inspect my plants along with any pests that may be present..I suppose I'm fortunate in that I have very few weeds since starting SFG 3 years ago.
There must be something I'm doing right, however pulling any weeds from my beds is just like lifting a piece of straw floating in a pond, no resistance at all..
Now I am not saying, lots of weeds would make me happier, just enjoy the connection..
I planted onions in some squares, and tossed in old garlic cloves, should tend to disrupt the attractants for some pests.I love pulling weeds Sat_ma10

Jimmy, you are more than welcome to come take over that duty for me.  I can supply you with enough weeds to make a day of it, and I will even buy you a new wheelbarrow to place them in and fill up before transporting to the compost.

Bring your fly fishing overalls with you, because the yard is a couple inches deep in water this AM.

I, also, get a satisfying feeling when I weed my SFGs as it is so easy if you do it on a regular basis.
It is the rest of the yard that overtakes my good intentions.

I'll admit it is easy to pull out the weeds, but this year so many weed seeds seem to have descended on my beds.  Some of these beds are 7 years old, so I guess I should expect it.

This afternoon I was pulling tiny weeds out of my SFG boxes. I felt very calm and satisfied as I tended the beds. I thought how different this is from my normal weeding activities (in the standard garden) hacking away with a hoe or other harsh mechanism. It all seemed so gentle as I puttered around the various squares, seeing the new plants popping up through the MM, pulling out a little weed here and there with just my fingers. So far I am liking this SFG way of growing veggies.

And it just gets better!  This is my 2nd year w/ SFG & the difference is amazing from last year.

Last year, we were more concerned w/ just getting the MM in the boxes & getting stuff planted.  Then the MM sank quite a bit and plants really didn't have the 6" or the nutrients they needed.

I also didn't do my fall cleanup, so I've got an absolute mess at the moment.  I am slowly getting the beds cleaned out & filled up so that I'll be ready for next year.

This year, I'm just concentrating on about 3 boxes that are 8x2.

Jimmy
I'm still pulling weeds but in this case it is plants that reseeded and went berserk when I wasn't looking. (sounds better than saying bad garden management...)  Dill, cilantro, borage, Jimmy these are crazy things.  These were purchased last year but have gone wild. Apparently borage and strawberries love each other, dill and garlic are great buddies too,  and cilantro is just everywhere in one 8x4 bed.
Clover is almost everywhere and keeping me busy. Thankfully it comes out pretty easy in Mel's Mix, and more so,  when I wet it down.

I'm still traumatized by all the weeding I had to do as a kid and I still loathe them.

Around here, they often come in bursts. Dandelions and others cast their children to the wind and they start growing up in my house ... my garden, that is. Sometimes our trees throw off so many light floating seeds that I start choking on them and have to go indoors. I'm serious!

We get lots of moss, too. It throws down roots that take up to an inch of soil with them ... there's no way to just pull it up. I grab it like chunks of broken pottery, then turn each little slab upside down and bury it, hoping that will help kill the moss. Not sure how well it's working yet.

I do like how easily weeds come out in SFG beds and pots. To me, that's actually a pretty big deal, as I find weeding a spectacularly unpleasant job.

Just came in from weeding the bed to plant beans in. I got a whole basket of cilantro and a couple orach. Will be tasty in a stir fry tonight.
