Hello Squarefoot forum,

I'm so very glad I found this place on the web.  Last fall, I got a copy of Mel's new book and decided to try square foot gardening on an experimental basis.  I had a small plot in my backyard where I tried some row gardening, and failed miserably!  So I converted it into 3 square foot raised beds and planted some seeds in one of them for the fall growing season.  (Here, that's late August through late October.)

Aside from losing my sunlight in that spot sooner than I anticipated (this was my first time to try fall growing, too), it went pretty darn well!  At least, well enough that I decided to continue using this method for my in-ground gardening.  I'm amazed at how much "stuff" you can grow in just a four-foot square area.

Now it's spring, with now five square-foot beds, and getting ready to start planting.

I've already gotten so much good info from what has been posted, and a lot more reading to do before I have much to say, but I wanted to say Hi! and thank you for providing this place for people to share this information.

Cheers!
Kate

Hi sanderson, thanks for the nice welcome, and I definitely will take you up on posting questions when they come up.  I also really just love seeing all the interesting ideas people are coming up with and sharing.

I tried to post photos of my first box in my original post, but for some reason I can't seem get my photos to upload.  (I don't have them hosted anywhere else at the moment, so I've been trying to get them to upload to the site one way or another.  I'm sure I'm just overlooking something obvious...   What a Face   As soon as I figure out what that is, I'll have photos to share.

Thanks again, I look forward to participating!

I think I found what I was missing... let's see how these come out...

This was my first square-foot garden bed, that I built last fall around late August.  It's got greenbeans, cabbage, carrots, onions, lettuce, and spinach.  I had a couple of other beds I built, but I decided to just plant in one of them for the fall.

The other plants got off to a good start and were doing well, but the shade started taking over in this spot later in September, and they just didn't get very far after that.

My greenbeans did great, I got a couple of pounds of them from just those few I planted.

Kate glad you\'re here to SFG!

your beds are beautiful!!

it is amazing how much food one can grow in a 4x4 bed isn't it!!

We are hoping to build one for my nephew and his wife, just waiting on them to finish up a wood pile.....we are excited to get them started....I even have some seeds and starts for them to plant....we want their 3 older children 6,5,3 to help plan and sow what they want to eat from the garden bed Smile

happy gardening

Thanks so much for the nice welcome, everyone!  I thought all those mangatars I've been seeing around are pretty cute, so I decided to make one for myself.  It kinda looks like me.

Big weekend in the garden this week... I should have new photos to post by tomorrow.

Sounds pretty much like us. One 7 X 4 bed and some potted tomatoes last year, has expanded this year to five 4X4's and some 1x's for the trellised plants. DH was so impressed with last years harvest he decided to go for the whole tamale, meaning every bit of space that gets enough sun.
And, BTW, hi to everyone else. happy hi

I got really inactive over the winter, sawing logs  but, today just set out my cabbage seedlings. Spring is nearly in full bloom where I am today. Oh happy days are here again, although I know mother nature might surprise us one more time.
