Bed 3 modification ?
After spending much time and more money than I wanted to, bed #2 is complete.
I have removed my bed #3 cold frame back down to it's basic foundation.
Going to add 2 x 6s as cross pieces, then a floor for the bed with appropriate sides.
I am planning to leave the base empty and open except for wire mesh to keep critters out, this will mean an air space of about 15 inches between the floor of the bed to the ground.
Is it ok to leave it open ? Since there will be a mesh I'll be able to constantly view the area...
On a side note, the treated lumber for the base has been in for 15 years, it's a little soft, however no rot has been detected. I did need to replace a portion that wasn't treated.
Cold frame removed ( I wasn't very happy with it anyway )
Building this up to about 20 inches from the ground

Re: Bed 3 modification ?
Very nice. I'm looking forward to a photo of all 3 beds. I know it's a lot of work, but next year your crops won't have to compete against the tree. I am soooo happy that we got all of the beds (but one) out of reach of competitive roots.
Re: Bed 3 modification ?
Finished and ready to fill.
or maybe I'll just rent it out as storage space for tanks....
Those angle irons go down 4 feet, they have been a blessing for anything I want to build here.
Lots of wood was left over from the cold frame I removed, gonna be filled with M.M. anyway.
The smaller section will be a cold frame I'll work on during this winter, there will be nothing heavy on the cover.. ( I hope )

Looking good. I swear you like building things (I call it tinkering) as much as you like SFG.

Sanderson
I think your so right, I really do love SFG, especially the results I had the 1st (last ) season.
However, I'm not able to do much planning, just start on a project and go.
Fortunately my wife has an artistic side and can visualize way ahead, she draws the plans and I do the work.
An excellent combination in my opinion.
I'm gonna try real hard to plan ahead on the small cold frame section.

Yep It's taking me entire days, however' it's now fall, leaves have changed color, temperatures are wonderful to work in.
I think I love the fall most of all, even though I'm not happy for what follows.
It's so refreshing to do outside work at this time of the year, I wouldn't mind if it stayed like this all the time

I thought before I fill these I would add PVC to each corner in case I want to make a cover..
I'd like to get them tight into the corners
Any ideas on how to fasten these to corners ?

Re: Bed 3 modification ?
jimmycee, what on earth are the likes of us to do in the winter? I have spent the entire summer doing things in the garden and now that winter is upon us everything stops. I haven't even had much time just to sit and do nothing, there has always been something that needs to be done to progress the dream of what I want my garden to be.
I still have a major job I need to do, place the woodchips I received yesterday on to my garden, but the forecast is rain from now until Friday, then snow/rain the following day.
Oh dear! I'm still whining. I need to get out and remember that my skin is still waterproof, and at this time of year precipitation is normally snow not rain.

not to worry, I saved all my painting, shop work, music practice, computer work, wallpapering, fishing stuff, etc, oh yes and snow/ice removal for the quieter months of the year.
Beside that I have a wife who likes thing neat and tidy...LOL...need I say more ?

Re: Bed 3 modification ?
Thanks but forget about the corner post's inside, I can't put them in the corners, corners are fastened with SS angle iron I'm not about to try to drill into again.
I'll just put all on the outer edges..

Plumbers tape. You know the old adage, "If it doesn't move and it's suppose to move, use WD40. If it moves and it's not suppose to move, use duct tape." Well, plumber's tape is my 3rd item.jimmy cee wrote:I thought before I fill these I would add PVC to each corner in case I want to make a cover..

Re: Bed 3 modification ?
Bed 3 is complete, filled to the brim and more...I used the close proximity to store M.M. from bed #4, if weather holds out maybe I can finish #4...
Here is bed 4, roots weren't as bad as this was the last bed made last fall.
Will be adding 6 inch spacing in height to this bed also.

bed 4 is ready for rebuilding now. I may combine the 2 beds in one bottom foundation.
The smaller unit I will use as a herb garden.

I don't think I'll ever be THERE. yesterday my wife informed me she wanted the kitchen re-papered and repainted...OMG just because it's been there for 50 years she thinks it needs to be updated.
and all I wanna do is play in my garden....

Re: Bed 3 modification ?
You and my husband and lots of others! When I wanted our white walls painted a super pale chocolate brown (HD 75% Haze) with white trims, he said, "What's wrong with white walls? They're just fine!" Now, he is happy we did it! Our ceilings are cathedral and I did all of the painting at the wall/ceiling juncture.
