Post  Blackie64 10/8/2014, 11:48 am

Is this the way to introduce myself??? I couldn't find any other way in

This is Blackie64 located in Los Lunas New Mexico -- about 25 miles south of Albuquerque (where the balloon fiesta is happening this week)

I'm really interested in learning about SFG and so I'll spend most of my time just reading what's available

Blackie,  Welcome to the SFG Forum!  glad you\'re here You can also introduce yourself at Home Page, Introduce Yourself.  This is a great support site for anyone interested in learning more about SFG.  Do you have a copy of All New Square Foot Gardening, 1st or 2nd Edition, by Mel Bartholomew?  If not, it is a great starting point and you will refer to the book often.  I bought mine gently used on eBay and Amazon.

It looks like you are in the high desert, with some snow in the winter and summer highs in the 90s.  Rain of less than 10" annually, mostly in the summer and fall.  The "monsoons?"  SFG is perfect for gardening in your area.  Where I live in California we got only 2-3" of rain last year, with summers into the 100s, a few hard frost nights below 32*F in the winter.

If you have any questions, please ask.  We are here to help you. Very Happy  You can also browse many, many topics through the Search Box.

The search feature will be your new best friend - there is a wealth of information stored up in it. I rarely have an issue that I can't figure out by reading from there.

Welcome to the forum. I hope you'll feel comfortable and hang around a bit.
Happy Gardening!

Always happy to see a new "face".  Welcome!  Our members are from all over the world, so there's a wealth of information.  I'm a Georgia transplant living in Southeast Michigan.  I totally agree with what Sanderson said.  Make sure you have the "All New Square Foot Gardening book" (ASFG). I have all the SFG books, including the original "Square Food Gardening" that I purchased in the early 90s.  Personally, I prefer the 2nd edition of ASFG.  I still refer to it often, even though I've been doing SFG and ASFG for many years.

YES, a new face.  Welcome.  I think you will enjoy the SFG method.  It makes sense.  I use tabletops because of bad knees and back and am so grateful I can continue gardening.  The books are also available on Kindle, but if you like to make notes in the margins, then get a hard copy as it is also easier to look up stuff.   I got mine in the gardening section of Lowes.  Saw it, sat down on a outdoor furniture display, skimmed the book and said to self "I can do this".  It got me back to gardening.

Hi Blackie64, welcome to the group.
I have actually taken the SFG book and had it spiral bound, so it opens and the pages lay flat. I think you will see the benefit of learning this method. Smile

Welcome!  Nice to see another desert dweller!  SFG in raised beds works amazingly for us, but we have some different/weird timing issues to contend with. Smile

Hi Blackie 64.  Welcome to the forum.  This site helped me many times and the folks here are very kind and patient.  I've avoided quite a few misstep because of the advice of more experienced gardeners.  I'm about in my second year of fall/winter gardening.

I wish you much success with your gardening endeavors.  Enjoy your time here!

Post  llama momma 10/16/2014, 5:36 pm

Welcome Blackie 64,  the book is the way to go!  Four years later there are times I refer back to it. Yes, it's that good.
One of the best things I've done with the book is go to the printer and have the spine taken off.
I put each page inside a page protector that had pre punched holes ready to go into a binder. Great way to add many pages of my own notes, all in one convenient place. I remember in the beginning taking a few pages out to the garden as a reference. In those protected sheets the pages won't tear, get dirty or rained on.
Other forum members have had the book spiral bound. Not sure how that worked out in the long run
Happy Gardening!
