Something is eating my tomatoes!

I got too busy and put off setting up a vertical frame for my tomatoes this year. Then I lost my job, and left my garden to fend for itself for several weeks. When I got back to it, I couldn't lift the vines without breaking them, so I left them sprawled on the ground. If I ever had any doubt about the benefits of growing tomatoes vertically, this summer cured them! They produced fewer fruit, and most of them were smaller. Lying on the ground, many fruit rotted before ripening. We had some dry weather followed by heavy rains, so many of the fruit split, and immediately grew mold in the split. 

On top of this, something has been eating the fruit. Whatever it is, it seems to prefer the larger fruit, but it will eat about half of each fruit it touches, and leave the other half to rot. I haven't seen any critters but birds in my garden, and I haven't seen them near the tomatoes. Whatever it is, it seems to prefer the fruit lying on the ground and hidden by leaves. Any guesses what's eating my tomatoes and what to do about it?

It could be squirrels.

I had one badly diseased tomato plant and I decided not to pick the tomatoes because I had so many tomatoes off good plants.  The tomatoes eventually dropped to the ground.  One day I was working near the tomato bed and looked over at the tomatoes and saw a chipmunk eating away at one of the tomatoes on the ground.  He spent about 5 minutes eating and then ran off.  I guess he got his stomach full.  He only ate about half of the tomato.

Slugs

Squirrels or chipmunks do sound likely. What to do about them?
