Protective covering advice please :)

Hi everyone!

We have a lot of critters, insects, moths and all sorts of wanted and unwanted bugs in our area. In the next few days we plan to make a PVC structure over our boxes and put a protective covering over it. We had a suggestion to use remay since it allows airflow yet keeps out the bugs. However our boxes are fairly large, 6x3, and we wanted to use one singular piece of fabric per box. The remay we have found does not come in pieces large enough and we would have to somehow attach pieces together. Is there any other fabric you would suggest using that comes in large enough pieces or any other ideas to help keep unwanted pesks out? Any help is mucho appreciated Smile

Bridal tulle fabric comes in 72" wide. Joann's Fabrics with on on-line printable coupon and buy it by the bolt = savings. It's not appropriate for anything that needs a pollinator (bee, syrphid fly, bumble bee, etc) And won't keep out squirrels, etc. Southern garden made a great set of hardware cloth covers that tulle can be used over. Use large, medium and small binder clippers to secure. (Office Depot, etc.) Hope this gets you started. Very Happy

This stuff is on a 13 foot wide roll; buy by the foot.

For the cost though, you could buy a used sewing machine and make whatever sizes you need from cheaper material.

I am pretty sure my tulle came in 108" width which is perfect for me putting over a 3 x 8 bed. But it usually only lasts 1 year for me because our season is so long. For the rib supports, I cut down the 10 foot pvc to about 8 feet and then there was plenty of room that allowed that width to work.

I really like the tulle because you can easily see through the fabric to see your plants happily growing bug free inside.

I'm a fan of clips from the dollar store. They're big and quite gentle on fabrics.

Yolos, you may be correct on the 108" width. I was running out the door when I replied this morning.

Marc, Dollar store slips? Are they binder clips or plastic. I haven't checked out one of the dollar/99 cent stores for goodies. I should just go see what I can repurpose.

The ones I see at Dollar Tree are big plastic ones. Blue ones and white ones together in a pack. They're not nearly as strong as those metal office clips, but they held on through our winter last year and this spring and summer just fine. And you can't beat the price.
