I bought a 25 lb. bag of Chickity Doo Doo.  It says it is 100% composted chicken manure.  But it also calls itself "fertilizer" and calls for 2 cups per 100 square feet.  Am I going to destroy all my seedlings if I use this as 1/5 of my compost mix?  I am starting with one 4' x 4' x 6" deep TTSFG.  BTW, 1/5 of compost equals 4 gallons in a 16 square foot bed.

Please help.  I never got a SFG last year because we moved and I have just completed construction of my TTSFG.  I plan on keeping it covered during the winter but I wanted it avail for planting first thing in the spring, so I want to fill it now.

Docguy, Congrats on finally being able to start your SFG. Very Happy I think some folks use this product in their MM but I don't know if it is 1/5, or less, of the volume of the compost. I hope folks from your area are able to help you with your planting schedule and varieties.

Doc,
I bought a 25 Lb. bag myself earlier this year when I first started my SFG, I applied about 3/4 of a gallon to a 20 square foot bed which I feel was way too much. First thing I noticed was the smell, took two or three good rains before the smell died down in the town, and seems like my plants didn't benefit from it, they were stunted and really green but slow to get going. I was not impressed with it, I have the remainder of the 25 Lbs. bag left and am pretty sure this is a product I will never use again once I figure a way to get rid of it. I may add it to my working compost piles a small amount at a time until it is gone. So to answer your question, yes I believe "4 gallons in a 16 square foot bed" is considerably way too much.

I used Black Hen which is essentially the same stuff, 100% composted chicken manure labeled fertilizer, in my very first TTSFG bed. It was 1/5 of my compost mix.  I had fantastic gardens that year.  I still add it to my homemade compost.  I don't plant until the smell goes away, usually the next day or two.

Maybe mixing it well into the MM is the secret to hiding the smell. ??

That is what I plan to do, a little bit at a time added to my compost tumbler so I can  dispose of it.
