Here are a couple pics of tonight's harvest from the community garden...Fat N' Sassy and Giant Marconi peppers - Black Krim, Carbon, Hillbilly, San Marzano tomatoes - summer squash.

Here's a pic of a few Giant Marconi peppers. These are supposed to be great for grilling/fajitas. One problem I am finding is that these are so long that many large ones have rotted where they touch the ground as I decided to pinch-back pepper plants heavily this year. It worked really well for the green bell peppers...not so much for these.

That stuff looks great! What a beautiful bunch of veggies. How does the dollar come in? Do you pay one every visit or something? I'm not much up on how community gardens tend to work.

I grew Giant Marconi last year, but a lot of them got sunburnt because there wasn't enough foliage to cover how big they get. They had a great flavor and are a substantial pepper! I was going to grow them again this year, but couldn't find them.

Yes, I use Mels Mix in my 4x8 raised bed at the community garden...in that bed I currently have around 26 open squares where beets and cabbage were harvested...also there I have a handful of Caribbean Red Habanero peppers and a couple tomato plants (Thai Pink Egg and Cherokee).

I'll fill the empty squares with fall carrots, beets, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli, however I can't water and keep an eye on the cabbage worms there like I can at my home beds.

The native soil in the community garden is really good so I grow what I can without all the expense of lumber, mels mix, etc.

Are your Cherokees in the MM splitting?

My Cherokees don't seem to be splitting...they are just ripening while relatively small.

My Carbon tomatoes seem to have concentric circular cracking on the top of ripening small fruits...big ones are ok.

My Brandywine, Green Zebra, Hillbilly, and Black Krim are probably the best with little to no cracking, splitting, etc. Hillbilly tomatoes are supposed to be striped red and yellow, but I am finding mine are turning out mostly solid yellow.

My biggest disappointment so far this year has to be my Boston Pickling cukes (seeds from Baker Creek)...9 of 10 look like a distorted ball - too fat on one end, too skinny on the other end, with premature yellowing. I see bumble bees on the flowers every day and I have plenty of successful varieties in the same area (Chelsea Prize, Tasty Green, and Marketmore).

How big do your green zebras get? And how do you know when to pick them? This is my first year planting them.

I'm finding that Green Zebras soften up a bit and go from pale green to yellowish when ready. They are on the small side...maybe smaller than an apple.

Jeez, apples are pretty big! My green zebras are only golf ball size now, but if they get as big as even a smallish apple, that would be great. Thanks, I'll look for the yellowing. I hope that doesn't make them look less visually striking!

One of my Black Krims were doing well then one day a branch broke off in heavy wind with nearly 8 pounds of large green fruit on it. Talk about a bummer! Brought them inside to ripen.
My Hillbilly are solid red so far. Boston P. Cukes like yours fat and short one end, skinny at the other and like you lots of bees here, both honey and bumble bees.
