Does anyone use paraffin to seal jams and jellies? That was the way my Mother did it so I used to do it. I used any and all types of small glass jars for J/J as well as little Ball jars but re-using the lids!

paraffin is no longer recommended. I just can all my jellies and jams and know for sure the foods are sealed.

+1, Camp!  I do the same.  Just not worth the risk.

Yes - I don't use paraffin either.  And, I also don't use anything but regular canning jars.  I want to be as safe as possible.

I did a couple years ago!  The "prepper" version:  tuna cans, coils of corrugated cardboard and paraffin with a bit of lavender to mask the tuna smell.

I have some left over and just wondered if anyone used it for J/J any more.  Thinking more about it, why would I want to add a petroleum wax to my food??  I don't!

PS Sterno candles. That's the word I was looking for. For actual cooking without propane.

I have to get on my soapbox here. I don't like paraffin because it is a by-product of oil. Who wants to rub crude oil on their anything? I just double-checked myself to make certain I wasn't ranting accurately. A google search led to finding this:

  • par·af·fin
  • [ párrəfin ]

  1. fuel oil: a mixture of liquid hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum and used as a domestic heating fuel and as fuel for aircraft.
  2. treat with kerosene: to treat something by saturating, impregnating, or coating it with kerosene or paraffin wax

The way it sounds here is even worse than I thought. No paraffin here for anything that touches my body, inside or out.
