Finches from He11! Empty Finches from He11!

Post  GardenGroupie 8/4/2014, 6:59 pm

Yesterday I seeded a few open spaces in my raised bed. Not long after that, pretty yellow finch stopped by and started pecking away. I then covered most of the space with pizza box cardboard. Today he stopped by again went right for the little space where I had put a few kale seeds.

How the heck does a bird know there are a few seeds in the middle of such a variety of growing veggies (lettuce, cuc, carrots...). Really???

I'm now waiting for light weight garden fabric. It'll also protect from heavy rain, so it's not just for the birds.

Like they say..." I feel your pain". They are really a form of feathered locusts, set upon this earth to decimate gardens and crush the hearts of SFG gardeners Evil or Very Mad  Get some netting and cover your beds, replant and move on! If you spend too much time obsessing on those winged rats you'll miss a chance to get another planting in before the season changes. Don't let a good garden bed just sit there waiting for Spring! Fight the noble fight....

Oh, I won't be giving up any time soon. I ordered some garden fabric that doesn't retain heat and it should be here Wednesday. For now, cardboard works.

 funny post

My wife and I were looking at our bird feeder this morning and, specifically, looking at the yellow finches that visit it.  This jarred my memory about your post and I told her about it.  I told her what you said (she got a good chuckle about how you phrased it).

We have noticed that, because we have a bird feeder, the birds have NEVER stolen seeds from my beds.  Now, I'm just assuming it is the bird feeder.  I have no other defenses in place, so it makes sense.  The feeder is located far away from my garden on the other end of our house.  I think the birds prefer an easy meal as opposed to foraging in my beds.

My wife said, "You might not want to suggest a bird feeder.  I'm not sure how [yardslave] would feel about feeding the enemy."

Anyway, I thought all of that was amusing.  Um, not the seed stealing part though.    Razz
