Good morning everyone,

I had one of our gardeners calls me with a question regarding a white residue that is showing up on his plants.  He is using Mel's Mix and it is the same soil that we are using here at headquarters.  We have not had anything like this in our gardens or the community gardens in the area.  Have any of you had this issue?  What is it?  is it something to worry about?

Thanks for your help!

Where is the garden and can we get a picture.  First guess would be powdery mildew, but need more information.

The short answer is, I don't know.

The long answer is:There is simply not enough information provided to give you a reasonable, rational answer.
Here are my first questions: What is the location of the garden?
Is the white stuff tree pollen?
Has there been any treatments use on the growing mix or the plants?
Is the 'white stuff' causing your plants any damage? If so, how so?

The answers to these questions would lead to other more pertinent questions to narrow down the problem.

Please post a photo so that we can narrow down our questions and perhaps give you a reasonable response.

Yep. If you can't take a picture of your own, you could always find a pic on the internet that looks similar. Then either click the picture to read the accompanying web page and its text, or copy the picture and post it here.

I like to google up the usual search results, then click on "images" to get a huge selection of pictures rather than text. A search for "powdery mildew" can get you started (I'm among those guessing that might well be what it is), and "downy mildew" is another worthwhile search.

That is what I told him to do.  I haven't seen anything here like that.  Once I get the picture of it I will make sure I post it here to see if you all have any ideas.

The first thing I was thinking as well was a mold of some sorts.  I know I saw some white residue on my radishes this year when I pulled them but nothing on the leaves.

Thanks for your input everyone!

I would also advise the person to join this Forum!  Very Happy  The folks here are from all over and someone usually has an answer, or two, or three, within minutes or hours. No shy ones here!
