turnips I think are 4 per square but watch your overall spacing and positioning from square to square.

Since I prefer the greens to the roots, I plant my turnips 8 to a square and harvest the leaves - cut and come again. If I decide to let some roots grow I just completely cut down a plant or 3 to give its neighbors more room.

Since I only plant turnips for their leaves, I plant 9 per square. I like the leaves when they are medium to medium-large in size so I cut from the outside and return when the next set of leaves have reached my desired size. However, do be mindful of neighboring squares as you may have some overlap. I tend to plant single items next to densely populated squares such as collards or mustard greens as they both are 1 per square.
